Title: Pink and blue glass bowl made of 2 pieces fused together...
Post by: rocco on July 21, 2013, 01:11:18 PM
Sort of "Incalmo" technique used in making this bowl: inner blue part fused with the outer part which is pink fading to clear glass.
Flat polished base.

Diameter 18 cm, height 9.5 cm.

It is quite attractive, but I don't know if there is much vintage to it...
Any ideas of maker and/or age?

Thanks!
Michael

Ok, seems to be a tough one ;D

My search didn't come up with much, apart from the fact that "Incalmo" should be the right technical term for this piece.
Certainly a technique used widely in Murano, but I would think not exclusively...

Sort of a role model seems to be this gorgeous Incalmo vase (more often seen as a lamp) by Angelo Mangiarotti >> Link (http://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/dining-entertaining/vases/extremely-rare-angelo-mangiarotti-saffo-vase/id-f_241494/)

So could it be from Murano as well, or should I look rather towards Poland, China,...?
The seller claimed that it came from an aunt who had passed away 20 years ago; if that is true it could have been made anywhere between the 1960s and 1990s.

Thanks
Michael

It is as lovely as I am clueless.... ???

I believe Dartington Crystal made a bowl that looks superficially similar but I do not know if it was using the same technique (and I can not find an example at the moment). Not sure that would fit into the time frame though.

I'm sure we've had something similar on here before, but what or where I can't remember

Thanks a lot for your thoughts! :D

Like Christine I have the feeling I have seen something like it before, but cannot find anything (and have no clue how to search for it).
I looked at 100s of pictures of Dartington glass, but nothing popped up.

There are several vaguely similar shaped bowls found online, contemporary decorative glass possibly made in Poland or China, but none made of 2 seperate parts >> example on alibaba.com (http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/492000646/Glass_Floating_Candle_Bowl.html)

Searching for Incalmo technique brought up a German glass studio run by Cornelius Réer showing a bowl in a similar shape (this range is called Incalmo which would fit quite nicely, but I cannot really detect the joint between the glass pieces). >> Link (http://www.formverwaltung.de/reer/incalmo.html)

I still thought it was worth to write them an e-mail and ask...

Well, Mr. Réer answered very nicely that the bowl is not by him...

So, anyone else an idea / a guess?

Thanks!

Perhaps Seguso Viro, the masters of Incalmo. Not in the book but that dates from 1994, it may be later. Although it should be signed, of course.

Just noticed a couple of Hadeland pieces online using this technique, designed by Arne Jon Jutrem. Might be worth a quick search even just to rule out.  :)

Thanks a lot Ivo and Greg!

Seguso Viro produce(d) some stunning glass...
And I found a few Hadeland pieces online in "Incalmo" technique, but they were signed, too.
My bowl has no signature anywhere, and I'm not sure if the execution is good enough for one of those top makers.

On the other hand I assume that it isn't so easy to blow a piece like this (how did they manage to fuse the blue bit to the inside of the pink bit? ;) )
And a polished base isn't the worst finish after all...

Sort of clueless, too.

The technique involves two bubbles which are each cut in half and joined together to make one single bubble.  The hollow dish shape is made later from that fused bubble. You would not see a seam.  Obviously it requires two highly experienced glass blowers and a steady hand.

The genius of advanced incalmo is that the seam can be diagonal; that one part of the piece can be striped or checkered or of any pattern.  Or there can be more than one joining operation.....   Don't try this at home.

;D Don't worry, Ivo -- I will not start my glass-making career with an Incalmo piece.
And thanks a lot for explaining the matter further!

So at least I know that an experienced glass blower has made my piece, just not which one :)

experienced yes, but I'm not sure it is truly incalmo. If I were to attempt making it, I would go about it in some different ways and so just as the one you see there would be no differential line between the 2 colors. It may be incalmo but there are other ways to achieve this same look. If I was running production of this piece it would be more economical to do it other ways than incalmo and still achieve this same look and use fewer assistants and have a smaller rate of rejections. Ivo, in my experience, one such as the one shown would require more than just 2 highly experienced blowers.

Thanks a lot Tom for the glass artist's point of view!

I took two close-ups of the area where the two pieces are joined together (at least that is what I assume).
There is a ridge at the upper side, while at the inside the transition seems quite smooth.

Unfortunately very hard to see (and capture)

Here is that Dartington bowl I mentioned, perhaps not incalmo but it looks like there are two blown bubbles to me, one open at the base and the other open at the top. It has a Dartington Crystal paper label and is acid etched "Dartington" on the base, apparently a design by Samantha Sweet.

Thanks a lot John for taking the pic of the bowl! :D
Similar style indeed, though I would rather think mine is from a different maker...
