hi board.
can a mod clear up a nagging issue i have........
i see on posts quite often the reply to value requests from members the answer"we do not discuss values on the board as it is subjective"often by a mod then recently a value estimate was openly given on a post by a different mod,so is it the royal "we" or is it just personal choice if you wish to express your opinion as to value or a board policy that you dont or does it just depend on who is offering up the value?????
cheers.
-
The Board Policy topic covers this: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,6521.0.html
Many people come here looking for valuations and sometimes expect a quick response - well, we do ask you to be patient as:
Not everyone drops by on a daily basis. It may take a week or two, or longer, to get a reply. Some after many months! Bumping after a month is fine.
Any value indications that are given are only opinions and will be in the answerer's currency; it is up to you to convert to your currency.
...
We are only human and can make mistakes too!
-
cheers christine.
i was hoping you would answer the question,so it is the roayl "we" then and if we choose to add a valuation as our opinion then we can............thanks for clearing that up for me i should read the rules but often they arent applied evenly in my opinion so i dont bother i just expect to get poked if i do something wrong.cheers........
-
I wasn't answering, that was was Anne. And I believe there are only two active mods ATM: Anne and Kev. I'm not a moderator.
There are also very few hard and fast rules, mostly it is guidance, so perhaps you should read that page
-
i always get you both mixed up sorry i meant to say Anne not Christine.........
and im right it was a mod who offered the value hence why my querry.........
-
I think Kev actually said what people were paying 10 years ago and what they are willing to pay now. Those are just his observations not a valuation
-
i missed that post so there are 2 in recent days with values....i was talking about another post.........and its still expressing a view to value though in my opinion....as was the price value offered for the belgian weight i was talking about in the first instance.....
eitherway its a mute point now as obv we are free to mention values as personal opinions which was why i asked my question in the first place as whats fair for one should be fair to all..........
-
In the days when the net was young we used alt.rec.antiques. Whenever anyone asked for a value - any value - someone would answer "$100"
I think we could do the same.
-
i prefer the old chestnut of 80/120 auction est..........always works :)
-
I would personally not wish to pay more than £30 for one like this.
That is just the figure that reflects Kev's level of interest.
It still wasn't a valuation, which is what people are generally asking for. They want to know for insurance purposes, or reasons of probate or how to price their ebay offerings. The first two could have legal repercussions if we commit to a figure in the public domain. We are not qualified to do this. The third is totally subjective and depends on too many variables, which is why we suggest looking at recent sales.
-
well thats ok then we can all gives prices and opinions that reflect our own levels of interest cant we.
-
Yes, as long as you are careful not to provide anything that could be deemed a valuation in the legal sense
-
Speaking personally, I would never offer a valuation, simply because I'm not qualified to do so - i.e. I'm not an appraiser or valuer. The only time I may mention money is in respect of either (a) what I paid for something or (b) what I've seen them on sale at. Neither, in my opinion, constitute a valuation and shouldn't be seen as such. :)
-
And for the record, I confirm that Christine's observations about my comments were correct. The amounts I stated were not "values" but were related to either prices realised or my own preferred price level for certain types of paperweight.
And in the paperweight world (as well as other glass), there are a number of collectors who can afford to bid against each other to the extent that "normal" retail prices are exceeded to a point that can distort apparent "values".
But, yes, if a board member wishes to give an opinion of a valuation, they really ought to be careful about the wording used.
-
I'd suggest that it's very inappropriate to give values on the Board, for a variety of reasons - I doubt that any two people would agree on the same value for anything.
The trend seems to have set in with books from the other side of the pond that have encouraged people to see glass linked to financial rather than intrinsic values, and there's now a fashion for people new to the Board thinking that they will be given a value. Some will do so out of curiosity to compare with their purchase price, but others will wish to use as a yardstick because their only intention is to sell on.
It's not difficult to imagine a certain type of ebay seller complaining that "well, you said it was worth xyz, and it's only realized abc - so much for your knowledge"....... the last thing we need.
I don't know the location of bigbri (I might have missed it on the stats), but States people might be more inclined to ask the question than others :)
-
Pure northern english Paul not too many miles away from Anne so not American.........
Well im glad i got that cleared up then, well sort of,well not at all really so we can but we cant but only as long as we word it properly.........as a statement of personal opinion......
I personally think values are not the place for a knowledge based board, whether the statements of opinion based on ralated prices from whenever,or from a personal opinion of what a piece might be worth,or a price any person would be prepared to pay,is a valuation and no use of the english language will change my views that a statement to price is still a valuation and as such users could believe that values are obtainable from the board.
Lets just say when any £££ statements are made it creates a grey area.......as valuations are just personal observations and opinions based on variables are they not.......
happy hunting.....
-
hmmmmm..............Cumbria etc., gosh way out in the sticks then.........speak English there, do they - you do surprise me ;) ;) ;)
Don't get me wrong.......I love to know that I've 'bought a bargain' as well as the next person.....................the very expression implies that we are making a judgment that we've bought for a quid something that's worth ten times more........always puts a smile on the face. It's just that I'm of the opinion that it'll only lead to tears if we get bogged down in the obviously impossible effort to find a commonly agreed value for something - just a waste of ink and time.
If you want an insurance value, then go back to the seller (if they were a professional source), or ask any a glass dealer who specializes in that area (although to be fair they are entitled to charge for their expertise - you may then get the reply in writing).
Members locations............another of my soapboxes, I'm afraid. :) Why do people omit their country of origin, or gender for that matter??
-
Why do people omit their country of origin
Kettle, black ;)
-
I really didnt realise my country of origin was omitted when i registered i didnt even realise there was a country of origin to mention..........must be the northern in me.....
as to English Paul i think you may find that the cumbrian dialect is the closest thing that resembles the dane/norse which is pre norman invasion which of corse means anything south of grassmere is basically french.......innit...... :) :) :P
-
must admit to not realizing my location details weren't there, now. Was this omission part of the re-structuring after the Board's shut down in recent times?
Am certain that I had included both Surrey, and my own local town, when I first registered several years back. However, perhaps I've missed the point that it's now Board policy not to show these details. :)
-
You have to add it to your profile, it's nothing to do with registration, so it's personal preference whether you add it or not

I can clear up the confusion over the missing Location info... under the previous version of the board the Location field was an add-on, which I installed. When we migrated to the current version of the board that add-on no longer worked, nor was it needed, as the new version has a Location field built in. The big problem is that migrating from old to new didn't port across the data for Locations, so each member has to update their own profile please (or a spare admin has to spend time doing it, and we don't have a spare admin! :P)
Paul's was there as I recall seeing it...
so to update your info, this is what you need to do...
1. Click the Profile link on the top menu bar or the Profile icon alongside any of your own posts.
2. Select Forum Profile under the Modify Profile menu on the left hand side.
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen where it says
Location: Tell us in which country you are located
and enter what you want. It can be a country and, if wanted an area or a city.
4. Click the Change Profile button at the bottom right, and all is done.
5. Check that the Location is showing alongside your posts as you want it to.
You can also add an Area of Interest in the line above that of Location, if you have a particular glass interest.

many thanks Anne - also for the explanation of how to re-do the details ;D - I'll get around to this soon. For those who may cherish some friendly thoughts I'm near London - and if there's anyone to whom I owe money..............then I've moved ;) ;)
-
Anne, thank you :-* Never noticed that my info had vanished... fixed 8)
