Title: 3 Bird bowl ?
Post by: malcmat on August 15, 2013, 06:22:00 PM
Hi, I am trying to I/D this delightful bowl decorated with 3 birds around a nest of 3 eggs. Its a very pale amber and the concave dish part is smooth. It weighs 2.105 kg and is 13.750 inches dia and 3 inches high. No Makers name or marks. Could it be French?
Many thanks
Malcolm

Definitely French, possibly 'Verlux'. I'll have a look around and see what I can find...

Hello

I'd not heard of Robj so I went a-googling and found that they commissioned ceramic and glass items, this from the website linked below:

Quote
ROBJ Paris started in 1908 when Jean Born produced his own ceramics and porcelain under that name. After WWI he involved more artistic and decorative elements into his designs.

In 1922 he suddenly died by a car accident and his shareholder Lucien Willmetz took over the business. Under his leadership Robj became very successful.

The pieces from that period are very stylish, elegant and original, always with a humoristic twist in the design. Almost all of them are decorative pieces, like boxes, vases, lamps and little figurines.

ROBJ pieces are produced by Sévres, Villeroy & Boch, Boulogny sur Seine, Limoges and others. ROBJ existed till 1931.

More about Robj here too https://www.divine-style-french-antiques.com/robj-paris-true-taste-of-art-deco-french-ceramics/ (https://www.divine-style-french-antiques.com/robj-paris-true-taste-of-art-deco-french-ceramics/)

The relatively short lifespan of the company probably explains why these are not well-known or often-seen.

Not wishing to split hairs here but I think Robj had items made for them possibly to their designs? Rather than the company making them themselves. I thought they were a retailer of ceramics and glass?  I've had a couple of pieces of glass marked Robj that I thought were made elsewhere so just wondering.

Yes you are correct M, I'll amend my post to make that clear.

I think this is totally fabulous, I'd love an opalescant plafont like this. It's on my bucket list now I know at least one does exist. ;D
I like it even better than the Jobling one with 3 birds.
We feed a flock of sparrows who hide in a huge bit of ivy.  8)

I suspect the marked example was more likely ‘Roba Paris’ rather than ‘Robj’. While Robj sold a range of glass, including a perfume burner by Lalique, I haven’t seen these kind of large pressed coupes/ plafonniers by Robj. A search for Roba Paris brings up many similar patterns with a three part repeat design and a similarly shaped rim.

Edited to add, here’s a matching bowl in pink also attributed to Roba Paris: https://www.liveauctioneers.com/price-result/roba-paris-frosted-glass-bowl-with-birds-ca1935/

And here’s a related design with squirrels rather than birds: https://www.antiques-delaval.com/en/crystal-glassware-nineteenth-twentieth/8426-coupe-suspension-verre-moule-opalescent-ecureuils-noisettes-roba-paris-xixe.html
