Got this and another paperweight at the thrift shop. I saw a very similar one online listed as Whitefriars. This does have a mark in one of the canes with the date 1976. Can anyone tell me if the correct ID is Whitefriars? Thanks so much.

Yes definitely, that is the Whitefriars monk in the centre of the dated cane. A very good find.

A very nice charity shop find.
I sometimes think this raises an ethical question. This weight is worth anything from £60-£80 depending on condition and which way the wind is blowing. The Charity shop would not have known its value - and probably priced it at £5 -£10.
In these circumstances - should we pay more? It is one thing finding a bargain at a car boot , auction or ebay - there is no guilt there - but if it is a charity shop? They are raising money for charitable purposes. Does one tell them the true value and/or offer them more money?
Does one pay £5 and leave feeling a little guilty? I have in the past found a nice military badge weight priced at £4 and given them £10 (knowing it is worth £20+)
What do others think? Would the attitude change depending on the charity (whether it is a good local charity or a hugh national charity with a £100k+ a year director, luxury offices and dodgy political activities)

I know what you are saying Martin, I've yet to find anything of real value at a charity shop so haven't faced that dilemma. But I know of someone that works at one who does car boot sales and has said she and the other staff get first pick through any donations, needless to say she doesn't pay highly for them but sells at a the car boot at a profit.
