Title: 1981 royal wedding whitefriars?No638 HELP!!!!
Post by: MR SMIFFF on August 27, 2013, 07:28:55 PM
Hi I have bought a great little paperweight this weekend for the royal wedding in 1983.I was wondering if whitefriars did one to celebrate this occasion.
It has a dia of about 70mm x 35mm high with 18 small windows around the side and 1 big one on the top with a polished pontil .It also has No 638 engraved on the side, I believe the main design to the weight is acid etched?......this shows the prince of wales feathers  and the wording.... royal 29th July 1981 wedding.
Any thoughts would be great.jay

Hi. I don't think it is Whitefriars - maybe Webb Corbett or similar?

That said, I have found that for the last few years Royal Memorabilia are the kiss of death when it comes to selling. I am sure some people like them, but I have not come across them!

Although Whitefriars closed in 1980, the name was acquired by and continued at Caithness and was used for their top quality weights - particularly lampwork flower designs.  As to Royal weight, pre 1980 Whitefriars issued a number of millefire deigns for the 25thi anniversary of the accession (1977) and of the coronation (1978). Post 1980 Caithness have issued many designs for Royal Events generally using a millefiore crown design, occasionally using lampwork flowers, and also many more basic weights with an engraved design.  This weight however does not match any of the Caithness styles.
