not sure if that's a correct description, but certainly the first finger bowl I've found with an heraldic motif of any sort. Very nice heavily cut bowl that I'm guessing dates to somewhere in the first half of the C20 - lead glass etc., but sadly a crack that runs across the base.
Do people think the unicorn over the castle wall relates to a particular coat of arms perhaps - it doesn't have a motto, so maybe not. :-\
thanks for looking. :)

Fairbairn's Crests is the book you need, Paul. Long out of print I suspect, but you can find two editions on the Internet Archive here: http://archive.org/details/fairbairnsbookof01fair & http://archive.org/details/fairbairnscrests00fairrich - Enjoy! :)

thanks for taking the time to look this up Anne - that's the second on-line book that I've been directed to this week - the other being Westropp's 'Irish Glass' volume. This is the sort of internet data that I feel makes it all worthwhile and vindicates those times we so often spend cursing the screen and its foibles.
When I first saw this bowl I had a feeling that somewhere in the past - or in a book - I'd seen this rather distinctive pattern of deeply cut swags etc., but I've looked through the books and don't see it anywhere now - it made me think of Walsh. The crack is a tragedy - I'd willingly have paid a few pounds for it in good condition...........as it was it only cost me about 60p so not a problem. :)

There's a host of useful and interesting books on the Internet Archive site now, Paul, I find those in Kindle format very handy as I have the free Kindle reader app on my computer (as I don't own a Kindle) as they are usually much smaller downloads than the other formats.
