Title: 5" vase, clear with pale green and pink splodges and a hint of paprika
Post by: wolkenreb on September 23, 2013, 03:10:10 PM
Hi all. It's been a while since I requested an ID. I bought this wee vase a while ago and I really like it and feel sure it's a good piece.  However, I would like your opinions please.  It is 5 inches high and has the faint remains of a pontil scar (which you may just be able to pick out in the photo). Any ideas of maker?  Thank you!

Hello Nancy  :-*  This is Mtarfa.
It's a slightly "not-so-well-executed" version of a colourway I really rather like.
A white heavily splodged enamel background, (on a clear gather) with  fewer random green splodges and a sort of misty "veil" of paprika over that.
I have two bits, a small pot with a narrow rim and an absolutely stunning large decanter.

:-* to you too Sue! I do like your decanter (although I prefer the way the colours are more separate in my vase  :) ). Thanks for the ID - so soon too! Have you any idea when this might has been made Sue? Could I see your vase too?

I don't have a pic to hand and it's upstairs. Pic of the wee vase later.
I'm afraid I know very little about Mtarfa and dates. I did collect a fair bit of early stuff before I found out it wasn't Mdina (the very early stuff was a bit similar and nothing I had was marked), but they have gone on to develop in some very interesting ways all of their own.

The pic of my decanter isn't with my new good camera, it's all out of focus, so you can't see the detail so well, but it is there when you see it in reality.

So, I can say with some certainty that it's not very, very early Mtarfa, and it's not the most recent, because there is a fair bit of it in the secondary market.  :-\

Thanks Sue! It's great to get new info as I really didn't have a clue.

Looking at your piece, it is very much along the lines of an early shape (very Mdina-like ;D ), so I might hazard a guess it was early on in the development of this colourway. But it might also be an apprentice piece. (it is a little wonky.)

I was not referring to a 3-legged donkey.  ;)

My wee Mtarfa pot in this colourway.
