Title: Paperweight ID Assistance
Post by: dasm on October 05, 2013, 07:54:55 PM
Hi,

My mum has been displaying some of her old paperweights in her house and found a box that has some of her mothers paperweights which she has added to her display collection. I tried helping her with the ID of some of them and most were Caithness, one was identified on here as Paul Ysart thanks to KevinH. Only have one left to identify, unsure of age, my mum is sure it is early 70's, no markings on the bottom, I can't seem to find it in my Colin Terris book so I don't think it is Caithness, however the pictures are difficult to marry up with such a specific design. Does anybody on here recognise the design and know who may have made it?

Thanks in advance.

David

Hi David.

I think it is one of the paperweights that end up being called 'late Vasart / early Strathearn', as it is so hard to distinguish between them.

Alan.

Alan is probably correct, but I would like to see a photo of the base as sometimes that can help with these. What needs to be shown clearly is the way the central area is finished - grinding / smoothed / area of rough glass etc.

Hi Kevin,

Attached is the picture for you, hope it is ok, quite difficult to take a picture of!

Thanks

David

Forgot to say thanks to Alan for his identification  :), had a look online and I can see some very similar ones. Not sure if the base will give us any more info but will wait and see what KevinH says.

With that type of "fire polished" base (smooth central are but still a little rough looking) I would say this is more likely to be Strathearn than late Vasart.

Thanks Kevin, I will pass that information on!
