Title: Identification of blue lidded comport
Post by: Dubarry on October 31, 2013, 01:46:44 AM
Greetings from Downunder!  I have had no luck in identifying this comport over many months. The base only does appear on Pamela's wonderful Pressglas site (in pink) but unfortunately is in the "unknown" category. I include a box of matches in a photograph for perspective.  Any help would be gratefully appreciated! Barry

Ooops! 2 more photographs - I'm new to this board!

Barry, welcome to GMB  :)

?Scandinavia: Finland Iittala or Riihimaen?
probably still/again made today
not sure about the designer though

There's more on this pattern, if you search the board, as Zabkowice, Poland and Schreiber, Austria are further contenders...

Many thanks Pamela for your speedy response. I will certainly look further on the board for more information. I am pleased I discovered the pink comport base in the "Centrepieces, unknown" category on your site which prompted me to contact GMB.  Ours has a rich green uranium glow under UV light so presumably one of the original pieces. Judy & I had discussed it may be Iittala/Marimekko due to its style and pattern but no confirmation of this until now! Thanks again Pamela.  Over the years we have found your Pressglas site such a great reference and it's so easy to navigate! Best wishes, Barry

It's unlikely the rich glow is uranium; some older blue glass is but this is too far into the 20th C. The glow will be a heavy dose of manganese, which probably puts it relatively older

Thanks for the info Pamela . . . I have checked the boards and now know I have a Riihimaen Lasi "Barokki" comport designed by Erkkitapio Siiroinen.

Thanks also to "Lustrousstone" for her input!

Now all I have to identify is my cocktail shaker which is on a different post!

Thanks.
Barry

sorry Barry, many moons ago we had to learn that this is NOT Barokki - I'll try and hopefully find the related thread.

I had hoped you wouldn't trace that, but it's almost impossible to wipe out former, wrong attributions from www, I'm afraid  :'(

Hi again Pamela.

Are you saying the comport is not Riihimaen Lasi or just the model name is not Barokki?  With the www a little knowledge is a dangerous thing!

Many thanks, Barry

Tanja: Thanks for your info - if you know better, please would you tell us what it is then? Where are you situated please?
Regarding 'my' Barokki I might recall that Della helped us out of this unknown glass by sharing a Finnish web page identifying it as Barokki.
May we take it that the green ones with half pearls pictured by you are the REAL barokki? Maker? Designer? when and where?

Hi Pamela,
Tanja is correct, I believe. Please see this page: http://www.vaarinvarasto.com/puristelasi.php Image 7167, unnamed bowl, thought to be Riihimaen Lasi.

I'm sorry but I don't know the name of designer for the bowl.
All I know that it isn't Erkkitapio Siiroinen's Barokki for Riihimäen Lasi in the 70's.
Barokki was made at least in green, clear, yellow, blue and purple

And here's an unconfirmed information 'Zabkowice' :

Thanks Pamela!

Many thanks for your time and effort in following the thread back through time on GMB.  You were spot on with your original suggestion of Zabkowice and I understand it is unconfirmed, but dating it to around the turn of the century does explain the rich green glow under UV rather than a piece made in the 1960's!

Thanks again!
