Title: Intaglio Dog Paperweight - Essex Crystal?
Post by: SimonD on November 10, 2013, 09:31:37 AM
Can anyone provide information on this paperweight - maker, age, original purpose, possible value - please?

It measures 2.6 inches diameter, and has a low profile glass dome with what looks like an impressed/intaglio of dog's head on the reverse, which has been then painted. It is set on a gold leaf/effect background, and mounted in a brass base.

There are small Essex Crystal buttons with a similar (but very much smaller) design. Essex Crystal made jewelry, usually with a hunting theme. Could this be made by Essex Crystal also? Was this made as a commercial paperweight? Or perhaps as an advertising item for a shop display?

Looking forward to your replies,
Simon

Hi Simon.

One of the PCC members - Zvi Klemer - had exactly the same design of intaglio dog paperweight, and I recall he asked around the PCC a few years ago, and also took it to a recent PCA Convention in the US to try and get an ID.  I think he drew a blank each time: the Essex possibilty was raised, but so too was Belgium...along with lots of 'no idea'.

Sorry I cannot be more specific - but at least it is not a well known and positively attributed piece!

Thanks Alan,
We'll just have to live with the uncertainty for now! I'll post here if I find anything out,
