Title: Scandinavian glass w label?
Post by: kerry on November 12, 2013, 11:36:43 AM
Would appreciate some help in identifying this maker - I have searched but haven't had any luck.
Many thanks,
Kerry

Just had a result -I finally identified it - thought It looked a bit like Humppila, and then I found it was Kumela who merged with them.
That label was just so hard to read!

think the label should show silhouette of guy standing to the left, with the word KUMELA descending on the right, unerneath which is the word RIIHIMAKI - Made in Finland.
There's a selection of these Kumela 'fading colour' examples in Pina & Vigier, and what looks to be the same design of cylinder vase (in amethyst to clear) in Bill Geary's book - page 36, which is described as Riihimaki Vase  -  and that also carries a KUMELA label.
Unfortunately, your picture lacks sharpness and detail, so regret I can't be positive on that last comment  -  am sure we have Finnish experts here who will know.

Nice piece by the way. :)

To let us see the label you image needs to be much larger than it is. Make the longer side around 700 pixels, and then save for web / compress by 20% (depending on your image program) and that should give you a file small enough to fit the board's file settings but large enough for us to see what it is. The board will auto-create a smaller clickable thumbnail for display within your post, which will open the larger image when clicked, so you don't need to worry about doing that. :)

Anne  -  I think the point being made was that the label was largely illegible  -  so more detailed pic might not achieve anything.            To a certain extent I was risking my neck and taking a punt on which label it was, based on similar KUMELA vases from Finland.           Of course I could be wrong, and it might be a different label entirely. :)

But being able to see even partly legible labels is better than not seeing them in a tiny pic, Paul, as someone may be able to make out some detail that matches with a known referenced label. Also, being able to see the item more clearly may point towards a maker as well. Thumbnails are simply no use on the board. :)

I shan't argue with that common sense approach - let's hope we can read something of the label ;)

Fingers crossed, Paul. The colours are, as you say, very like Kumela. :)

Made by Kumela, designed by Kai Blomqvist. It may be signed on the base, perhaps Oy Kumela on one side and Kai Blomqvist opposite.

Another here and click to left for a further Kumela vase: https://picasaweb.google.com/Johnmj100/ScandinavianGlass#5462669468556863058

Thanks very much for the help  everyone.  Especially about uploading photos.  I tried 3 times to put a pic up - and I kept getting a message that the file was too large - so I kept reducing it.  Hence the tiny pic.  I'm beginning to get quite a bit of collecting bug for Scandinavian glass now. I originally started out with Whitefriars (and still collect it) and I going quite Scandi now!
Cheers
Kerry

P.S. I forgot the important bit.  There is a man blowing glass on the left side of the label, and the first three letters are KUM  - so Kumela is spot on!

there seems to be a variety of shapes under the heading of KUMELA vases, and it appears they probably would all have started life with the same label as yours.               They are attractive pieces with this shading/fading of colours in amethyst, honey, amber, celery earthy brown etc.                  Some of them can be seen in the 'Fire & Ice' book.
