Collector friends of mine presume it could be Bacchus.
Can anybody help to ID?

Hi. I think it is a nicely made Old English paperweight, probably from an unidentified factory rather than Bacchus.
There are a lot high quality Old English paperweights around of various styles, and I think it is a mistake to consider any good piece to be a 'Bacchus'. It was no doubt a good ruse for a certain dealer /author when he was selling a lot of these pieces, as it pushed the price up. However I do not think there is the evidence to support the Bacchus attribution for many of the good Old English paperweights - some may well be Bacchus, but I think the majority are from other, yet to be identified makers.
I do not see anything about this one to suggest it is definitely by Bacchus. I do not rule out the possibility, but it is not a typical classic Bacchus paperweight: that would have longer basket canes drawn together neatly underneath. I am also uneasy about the magenta and blue canes near the centre: they remind me of several other good Old English pieces I have seen that had more in common with Richardson than Bacchus. One big problem with any of these attributions is that factories opened and closed, and workers moved around, and so did the millefiori canes - sometimes unofficially I suspect.
