Title: Gilded glass
Post by: bat20 on December 01, 2013, 11:05:19 AM
Hi all, sadly this glass has a large chip on the under side of the base so worthless i would imagine,it is gilded with a broken pontil and a slightly recess around the pontil, the foot is narrower than i would expect so i'm wondering if it's Dutch and maybe earlier than 1810 or so.It has a short ring(ping)and maybe a bit brighter than normal, but certainly has the feel and tooling marks of an early glass, any thoughts many thanks..

Hi,

It has the style and look of an early 19th century port glass, c1820.  They are pretty common in their plain state but gilding is a relative rarity.

Thanks Neil,i think the foot may have been ground although there is a ledge rather than being flat,it really was the gilding that made me think it could have been older.
