Title: Saw it, bought it, love it, but what is it? Please help.
Post by: forgetmenot on December 02, 2013, 03:59:55 PM
Hi Everyone.

Whilst on Ebay I saw this vintage glass object, fell in love with it so bought it. Only problem is the seller knows nothing about it. The description just said " Art Deco Glass Box", now I also know nothing about it. Can anybody help????
It is approx 6" X 3" X 2"  or 15cm X 7.5cm X 5cm.  As you can see the sides and front open up, it also has 2 pale pink stones on the front. It is rather heavy too. Fingers crossed the pics attach ok....
Thank you in advance for any help, I am very grateful. :'( :-* :-* :-*

I think if you stand it upright you will find its a glass purse from the 30s. The two U shaped clips are where the strap was attached. I've seen a few of them over here & a couple of lady vanity collectors I know have them. They are far from common as most were discarded decades ago. From its size I would think its something the lady of the day would take out night clubbing as a statement piece.

That would be a handbag in English.  ;)

I believe there is quite a market for such scarce deco objects - so if you ever decide to sell, go for a fashion market, not glass!

Thank you Ohio, but the 2 u shaped clips actually go over little balls to help fasten it, but I can see what you mean about a purse.
When you open both sides 3 out of 4 sides(each side) are filled with glass, only the front D shape is empty. There are no places to attach a strap. I also cannot find any makers mark etc.
Love from Me   :-* :-* :-*

What you appear to be missing is the snap ball on the left side of your 2nd photo. The U shape clips would be snapped over the balls to hold the strap & the flat side (non curved front) of the purse/handbag would be riding on the ladies hip. If you turn your photo uprignt with the curved side facing & you & the flat side in the back with the top out of view you will see what I mean. These were the later style deco box purses that followed the beaded flapper purses of the mid to late 20s.
