Title: Permanent staining of glass
Post by: a40ty on December 09, 2013, 02:16:20 PM
Hi everyone,I hope this is an acceptable place to post this.
My borther-in-law and his wife have some Danish crystal glasses and the redwine ones have developed staining in the bottom. The owners are not the type to be heavy-handed when washing their glasses; they are very careful with them.
They produce their own wine which has a very, very dark red colour. So much so, that when a glass is rinsed, prior to washing, the water is clearly stained by just a drop or two of wine.

I suspect that minute scratches have become stained by the wine but that doesn't account for the fact the very bottom of the glass is clear.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance and if this is in the wrong place, please somebody, move it  ;)

Looks like a deposit from the wine to me. Perhaps a little more vigourous washing would do it - use a dishwasher tablet dissolved in warm water and let it stand for a hour or so . I think the deposit will wash right out with a little sponge - just like the teapot.

 :)

That should do the trick.  8)

Another thing to try would be biological washing liquid for clothes - the enzymes in it will "go" for anything organic.

But perhaps a bit of a dishwasher tablet might be best for tableware.

Thanks to you too, Sue.
They don't have a dishwasher so I'll give them some tablets to try and if that doesn't work ,then we'll go for the biological washing powder.
best wishes, aine

They'll only need a bit of one. ;)

Good!
Was it the dishwasher tablets?

It's biological liquid for clothes you should use - not powder. ;)

Why is there a difference?

I have used both. They both do the same thing and work in the same way.

I don't trust the powders to disolve properly and not to scratch glass.

That's why I use the biological liquid rather than dishwasher tablets too.

I don't use any of these smelly "biological" things at all - I'm horribly allergic to them.

It turns out that they tried something else; I had mentioned the use of denture-cleaning tablets for cleaning other things and they tried one of those instead. That's what worked  ;D
