Title: Bohemian souvenir mug or andenken henkel krug spa becher - Hellbrunn mid 19thc
Post by: flying free on December 16, 2013, 11:56:48 AM
I think... this is what it is.
I need some help with the place - on the one side it says Hellelbrunn which I think must be Hellbrunn?
On the other it appears to read Kranchen but I can't find anything on that so I'm not sure.

It's a little bit different to others I've found because firstly it is a handled mug ( or henkel krug??), whereas many I've seen are bechers without handles, or they are steins with lids and I don't think this had a lid.  A
Also the engraving is of the interior of the place on both sides, rather than a depiction of the outside of a building with trees as they often are.
The depiction is simple but very evocative and on the Kranchen side there are two beautiful huge hanging lanterns, so I thought that might help date it?
Dating is what I'm looking for really rather than maker.

It's a superb bright ruby red overlay - I think more recent production (20th century) is a much darker red overlay or flashing and they don't manage to make this lovely bright ruby any more.

measures 8.8cm high by 6.5cm wide at the rim (exc. handle of course)
Thumb slice on the handle and applied top down.
Flat polished base through to clear.
Very nicely made with the area of glass that supports the handle being left thicker and cut in an oval arch shape on the side of the mug,
straight facets all the way round all, rim bevelled cut and polished flat.

thanks for any help on the date and the place names
And also, is it wheel engraved please?

Dashing out but pics of polished flat base and more close ups to follow.

The first word is "Kesselbrunn" ;D
The second "Kränchen" I think...

This is quite a standard souvenir from the rhine cruise - not per se a spa mug which is oval to fit in a gown pocket and has measures on the side. Timewise think 1880 to 1920. Ruby flash, properly engraved, often some gilding - really nice collectables of an era long past.

thanks Ivo :) that makes sense about the shape with no handle for the gowns, and so not a spa becher.
I will have to go look up Rhine cruises now.

Just for interest I have found this (link) which has a description of the  Kränchen and Kesselbrunn spa waters
http://www.staatsbad-badems.de/EN/thermal_heilquellen.html

also that these spa waters were mentioned in a book 'My Life' by Countess Sophia Andreyevna Tolstaya, who was married to Tolstoy :)

I'm just wondering if this might be a little earlier than late 19th early 20th and more towards the middle of the 19th, because of the way the handle is applied, the shape of the handle and the engraving on the glass?
