hi Keith  -  certainly unusual.                Assume that's the overall height, in which case it's possible this is for liqueur or spirits.
Did wonder if it might have been a largish cologne container.

As to origin, always a chance it's Czech/Bohemian from around the mid '20's to late '30's  -  I don't think there's enough cutting to be ABP.
Are there any matching Nos.?

These are my 'any ideas' ;)

Thanks Paul, yep,it's 8 inches inc' the stopper,no numbers, the dealer did wonder about it being Czech/Bohemian,I just wondered if it may have been a late piece from Royal Brierley or one of the other local makers,by the way what's APB ? probably something I should know  ::) ;D ;D

it's ABP  -  shorthand for American Brilliant Period. :)             A style of cutting that apparently appeared simultaneously in Europe and the States........Ken says from about mid 1870's to about end of the first war  -  typified by masses of deep cutting and a minimum of surface area remaining plain.           Usually has the pin wheel on show somewhere, and lots of deep mitres.     Have a look at Charles Hajdamach's first book, chapter 14.

This one looks a bit off the wall for RB to me, but then am sure you know more about that factory than me.

Sorry this isn't much help.
