Title: stylised shell thing....any ideas on use or maker please
Post by: bfg on December 30, 2013, 05:21:24 PM
.....could be a paperweight of sorts I suppose - it is weighted by the heavy cased base.

very tactile, about 3 inches tall.

can't find anything similar on my usual searches so quite prepared to be told its a T K Maxx special

cheers

Mel

I'm only making a very vague suggestion that it might be Mtarfa.
I know they've made stranger shapes than the tube-y bendy bottles, I've seen some very odd things indeed, this might be a slightly superior one of their strange shaped things...  :)

I also thought Mtarfa but thought I'd wait and see if anyone else thought so too :)
the marbled pale orange and green is what made me think of them but I wasn't sure if I was seeing the pattern or colours correctly?
The other possible that occurred to me was Jozefina glass Poland.  But I don't know if this kind of quirky paperweight shaped thing is their type of design.

I can't really make out any Mtarfa colourway I know, the pics are a little out of focus when blown-up.
It was first and foremost the shape; and then the colours not being not Mtarfa - which isn't the same thing as saying they *are* Mtarfa... if you see what I mean.  ;D

ladies thanks for the replies

ah, Mtarfa. I had considered that as well but the base has concentric ribbing rather than a ground and polished base so had dismissed that as an option  :-\  I will have to re-open that line of investigation

I know my pics are generally rubbish but in this case I think the colours in the glass are slightly out of focus and merging  ;)

The base looks as if it was flattened on a marver.

With something like this - how can we tell which end the maker started at? ;)

My first "impression" of it, was that it is a Dali-esque telephone... I rather fancied it too! ;)

Colours look as if it was being prepared for a nice blown piece, but it looks as if the maker gathered over it too hot. The glass ran from the neck. As it went wrong, the maker twisted the iron and turned it into a nice "salvage" object. Happens all the time.

;-)

Happy New Year!

right on.  I've done this many times.

Ok, but Mtarfa does/did make strange shaped things quite deliberately.
It's not just the intestiney sort of bottles, I'm seen melting sorts of things that look a little bit like styles.
It was a pair I saw, with labels.  4 upright posts, with glass "draped" over them, they didn't know if they were supposed to be tables or bits of fencing.
They also make some stunningly lovely glass.  ;D

I'm tempted to think is started life as a candlestick that got carried away with itself, as aa and fuhfman appear to have intimated.  I lke it anyway,  and would have to have it if I saw it in a shop for sale... I love the 'unusual'. :)

Now this is just a shot in the dark,  so please don't shout me down!

I have been looking at some of Siddy Langley's work,  and she does a colour combination called 'Pheasant's Feather', that looks extremely similar to this 'Shell' colour way.  She also makes a lot of long necked bottles,  and just supposing she was making one and the glass slumped as she was drawing the neck up,  might she have decided to play with the glass to see what happens,  and ended up with this 'Shell thing'?  Much as aa and Furhman Glass have intimated.

Just a thought anyway, and as she has a well illustrated web site,  so, could it be worth sending her an email with a picture of your 'shell thing' just to see if she remembers making it?  If it was just a piece she was playing and experimenting with,  she may have decided not to sign it.

Here is the website address and if you scroll down you will see the 'Pheasant's Feather' pieces:

Also on eBay there is one of her pieces in this colour way with a picture of the base which has remarkable similarities... do look and see:

I just found this auction...

It reminded me of this thread.  ;)

No more than I reckon your thingy was another thingy that went wrong!
I just felt it was a bit of support for my Mtarfa suggestion for your bit., which is what I believe it to be.  :)

The seller does have some interesting items... glass duck from Marano, guilt edged mirrors, an otterman...
