Title: lidded colourful glass box
Post by: bat20 on January 25, 2014, 12:15:42 PM
Hi all, this 9cm high piece is matt ranging in colour from orange to pink and has some good wear to the base, the inside is a pink colour with black numbers on the base and inside the lid,the numbers are not the same but the lid and body look an exact match. The black line decoration is raised and over all it's got something about it,that could just be me though ::)Any ideas on this one ,many thanks

Wow! 1930's Bohemian one would have to suspect - looks like some complex processes have been used to create this - I'd love to see the rest of the set, if it is part of a dressing table set that is. Sorry I can't help further...

this may well come under the heading of 'tango' glass  -  Czechoslovakian (or Bohemian if you want)  -  and I'd agree with the suggestion of c. 1930.
If you put tango into the Board's search you may well find some more information that might help :)

I think its mould blown with a pink underlay cased in clear glass and then the clear glass has been enamelled in orange with black stripes.  It looks as though the orange has been quite significantly damaged?  or is it just the way the pics appear?

I don't know if this would be classed as 'classic' tango glass, as that is 'usually' two colours of solid coloured glass rather than the colours being achieved with enamelling (although I could be wrong on this i.e. what defines 'classic' tango glass).

I'm with you on this not being Tango.  :)

Thanks for the replies,to my untrained eye it seems to have a clear glass body with a thin pink lining on the inside and then a very thin layer of orange and the black lines in relief,i thought the orange may have been slightly sanded off for decoration because it does work aesthetically and the black is undamaged, but i don't really know enough about it to say.

Your pictures are not clear enough to see any detail I'm afraid :)
However just looking at the sides of the box where the lid joins the box, it looks damaged to me.  Can we see clearer pictures please?
thank you

o.k., so it's not tango  -  must admit '30's Czech isn't my area. :)

The lid joins the body just above the black line a 1/3rd down the body and there are no chips or obvious damage,i'll take some more detailed photos when i've got the light. :)

It just look as though the inner colour or enamelling is damaged, not that there are chips, but that is probably the decoration then and the pics :)  New bright pics close up would be helpful.

Paul, possibly not wrong.  I seem to remember ref the Tango Glass exhibition, that there was some comment about Tango glass representing the colourful dance of the Tango.  And I can't remember if the outcome of this was that there were pieces denoted as Tango Glass that didn't have two colours of glass ... will try and find references.  So I could well be wrong  :-[

You may be right m,perhaps the pink was just for the circles on the lid, there is no sign of sharp flakey damage to the orange though and it hasn't lifted off any of the black,i'll do my best with the photo's but the weathers not looking good tomorrow. ::)

This is as good as the light is going to get today i suspect and it's my naff camera not my wife's better one i can only get my hands on now and then >:(.Anyway looking at it in a more critical light i think m is right and the orange has worn off somehow on the lid although i think it does work well on the eye,a few more points to add on it has a ring to lid and body and the orange is much stronger under the lid.

I haven't found anything you would say was from the same stable yet,but i forgot to ask why do you think the lid number is different from the base? cheers.
