Title: Unknown Harlequin/Aladdins cave style weight
Post by: Nick77 on February 23, 2014, 05:35:26 PM
Hi All,
I can't  find a match for this one, it feels like it should be Perthshire, but its unmarked and made up mostly of frits, although there are some broken canes none are big enough to be able to recognise them, anyone recognise the maker?

63mm Dia. x 47mm 2 1/2" x 1 7/8"

Hi Nick

It is a Perthshire PP7  (Aladdin's Cave), which were made from broken cane frit.   See page 82 of the Perthshire book. They were not signed in any way.

Hi Alan,

I thought that from the book description but whenI checked a previous one
I had that was identified as a PP7 that was larger at 3" had more recognisable cane pieces and a solid blue ground with hollow ground base. Was there another Perthshire of this style as that seems quite different.
I'll try and find the photo.

This is the one I thought was a PP7

Hi Nick

I understand the confusion: the one you refer to with the blue ground is indeed an Aladdin's Cave design by Perthshire - but it is the version they released in 2002, called 'Cave'. Because it was released in the year they closed it is quite uncommon, compared to the PP7.  'Cave' may have had a PP number, but I don't think it is recorded anywhere; they released a PP248 that year, so I guess it would be around PP250 or thereabouts.

You have probably noted that the Perthshire book only goes up to PP185 in 1997: there are a good number of PP designs ( more than 60) that exist from 1997 to 2002, and which turn up from time to time. These can really puzzle collectors - not to mention all the one-offs, trial pieces, and variants which exist too! I have managed to get copies of most of the catalogues or product lists from the period 1998 to 2002, but I am not sure that the full list for 1997 (including mid year) is available.

Hi Alan

Many thanks, that explains my confusion then, I've been looking out for the post 1997 Perthshire catalogues but so far haven't found any for sale.
