I bought this glass in a local antiques shop today. It amongst a collection of other rummers which dated from perhaps 1800-60. This oiece stood out both in style but particularly the quality of the metal.
It is petal moulded, with a beaded basal knop. The foot has a rough pontil mark, plenty of wear and the glass is made of lead glass. The bowl has ample evidence of the maker's work with striations and tool marks. The glass also has plenty of inclusions and small bubbles. When tapped it gives the most astonishing ring.
From comparing with other glasses I have, I feel, based on the material and marks, that it could be as early as 1740. Is that too early for this style of glass?
