Title: Millifiori Paperweight...2
Post by: petet63 on March 06, 2014, 12:37:14 PM
This is the second piece. I thought Chinese but only because it seemed the canes were only a thin layer but that is an uneducated guess. 6cm wide and 5cm high.. Thanks .....again

Another Murano I think. The best way to learn about PWs is to read everything on this board. That's where I picked up what knowledge I have

I read what I can on here, it's the one place where you can believe what you read. To read it all on here would take a long time.  ;D thanks for the help.

I realised after I said that but I actually meant read everything new as it comes up, not everything old.

;D ;D I read a fair amount when I can. Edited because I replied to wrong thread. And glassobsessed answered what I had found out. I need to concentrate on one thing at a time, for some reason I can't Multi task  ;D. Thanks again.

I'm not convinced this one is Murano. Can't put my finger on it, but the look of the canes and the dome profile seems wrong to me. It also seems older. Of course, I could be wrong.

This doesn't have the Clarity of the others. I can try to get some close ups if it will help. The layer of canes are thin and suspended in the glass. I will use the Magnifier and post some up tomorrow with, if I can, a comparison of the colours.  Thanks all so far.

The layer of canes are thin and suspended in the glass.

That's actually a characteristic of many antique weights. Of course, it's also a characteristic of many Chinese weights. But, I don't think yours is Chinese.

The canes definitely look Murano to me.

Hi.

I am sure it is 100% Murano.  The canes are Murano, and it has a typical flat polished circular base.

The canes look like Fratelli Toso. I am reasonably certain that paperweight is by FT.

Here's some close ups. The pair were bought together so could be the same maker. (I know that's not scientific evidence  ;D). Pic 3 is from underneath.

As Alan has said, this is a 100% Murano weight.

And as glasstrufflehunter has said, it is probably Fratelli Toso.

Fratelli Toso are well known for using "very coggy" canes (but probably not the only company to use them) and also for aventurine or "coloured chip" grounds.

Some people may have been thrown off a little by Peter's initial photos, which are compressed vertically and show the weight as an oval shape rather the the circular / rounded form it actually is.

Ah, now the dome profile looks like Murano.

I didn't spot the squeezed  photo. It happens when cropping it too close. Sorry for the confusion. I will keep an eye on the pictures. Thanks for all the help. I do try different searches which ever way the responses go and I get very distracted by some stunning paperweights. It's still an area I find very difficult as it is such a big subject. Thanks again.  ;D
