I bought this pebble paperweight recently as John Ditchfield style missing silver frog or dragonfly signed to the base.
Looks to be a Peter Layton piece signed and dated 1981.
The shop thought it was Ditchfield style as there is an unusual small indentation to the top which they thought may be missing a silver frog or dragonfly. I do not think it is missing anything and I have never seen a Peter Layton piece with any silver frogs etc.
The weight is hollow and there is a tiny air hole in the center of the pontil , the small indentation on the top does not go completely through the glass.
Measures 4.5" in diameter or 11.5cm and weighs 470gm.
I am interested in what other people think about the indentation.
Thanks Roy

The "Layton" part looks almost right, although one of the loops at the beginning is different.
The "Peter" bit doesn't look the same as my examples. ???

Thanks Sue
I have had 3 pieces before and thought it looked very similar although I do not now have them to compare.
I will send some picture to his website to try and find out,

Does anybody know how many folk in the studio do the writing of "Peter Layton" on the work produced?
Or does PL do them all himself?
I have 2 examples, they don't look like each other at all. I was told by the seller of one of them, whom I have no reason to doubt, that from the signature, which IS Peter Layton's, that it is a piece he actually did make himself.

Only Peter will sign it himself, it takes him seconds as he is so practiced and he has the tool he needs at his desk in the showroom!
He will sign anything he made way after he made it if asked. Even 2nd quality pieces.
If you are ever in the area it is well worth a visit!

How does one tell if a piece has been made by Mr. Layton himself, or made by one of the other glassmakers?
-
You ask him when there :)
-
My family have moved from London, no reason to for me ever to have to go there again. ;D
I have been to the studio once.
The "ordinary" glassmakers were great - really friendly and helpful and willing to talk glass with somebody interested. ;)
-
Yeah great place to go for a visit. I love the seconds section where you can get some stunning pieces of glass for really not much money :)
-
So, no further forward with the matter of the actual maker of any piece ever being known or given their due credit.
And no way of anybody ever knowing whether a signed piece was made by the person who signed it. :'(

Peter signs his work, others sign theirs. I have a signed piece of Lane Rowe and I have a paperweight by Louis Thompson.
Sorry, thought that was clear from my original reply saying Peter signs his work.....

I have never seen a Peter Layton piece with any silver frogs etc.
That's the sort of rash thing I would say, but I've learnt that one should never say never! :-))
In the mid 1980's Peter Layton did some collaborative pieces with a jeweller, Margaret Turner.....
Not saying nuffink more as I am interested to hear what Peter says! Just wanted to put down my marker that I got there first :-))

When I sent an email asking for confirmation that it was Peter Layton it was confirmed in less than 1 minute , you cannot ask for more than that.
As to the indent in the top of the weight Sylvie was unable to answer this.
She has just sent me an email to say Peter will be in today and she will ask him and get back to me later today.
