Sorry for delay, but just back from a week in Ireland. Yes 100% certain Archimede Seguso.

thanks paul, what goodies did you buy over there in ireland ?

Bought a nice little 1950's Venini perfume atomiser and a small Fratelli Toso millefiore vase. Nearly bought a lovely pair of Georgian vases with that nice yellow tinge to the glass and Irish silver rims from 1794, but managed to resist as they were heavyand would have pushed me into excess baggage.

But worth the wait Ray. I think these anaimals are great, I'm now up to 9 of them, 7 black and white and 2 black and red and prices vary so much according to how they are described.

hi Paul
what prices do these's go for? it will end up on ebay at some time
-
I've paid everything from £12 up to £200, but the dog is one of the more common so I'd reckon £60-100 ought to cover it.
I've already got the same figure otherwise I'd be in the frame, not sure if Svazzo has this one or not.

Hi Ray and Paul,
I really have a feeling this dog is not Seguso.
I have seen a duck, a whale, and another dog like yours before at auction saying it was Seguso, but looking at how the pieces are made, the fact that they do not have eyes, and the overall feel, I really dont think its a Seguso piece. Also the ones I've seen like this ahve a satin look to them.
If you look closely at the actual Seguso pieces, they dont have a satin finish on them.
Like Paul I also collect this pieces, and all of them, no matter what kind of animal it is has had eyes, and a little more work done, as far as the sculptural elements and shapes.
I also mentioned to Paul about a whale he was bidding on Ebay, that I saw the same whale on another auction months earlier described as a newer Scandinavian piece by the seller. So I think there is another set of these pieces around that are not Seguso.
Also, the Seguso pieces have a Blue color to the black, that you can see zip out onto the white. If yours is solid black, then I would worry.
Hope this doesnt bring you down, but wanted to mention it to you.

moved to glass from Murano for further consideration of Javier's thoughts.

Javier anychance of posting some photo's of your Seguso black/white animals?
also the black does go into the white to make blue in some places and the eye's are pushed in
-
Hi Ray,
The shape of it just bothers me somehow... how big is it?
This is the simplest Dog I have, the others are more intricate.
Also, this is the only one without the Seguso label.
As you can see there's a bit of difference between the 2. Measures6" tall.

When I declared this to be Seguso back in May I was not aware that dubious items in this range were around. Javier and I had an exchange of e-mails re the whale to which he refers. I must admit that all the animals in my own collection have the applied black eyes as shown in the deer below. I am wondering if these "mutations with either no eyes or inset eyes may in fact be by Seguso with the design having been adapted since his death in 1999 or if in fact they are being produced elsewhere. On none of mine do the colours run to blue where there is a mixing it is a true amethyst. An e-mail to Seguso might be a worthwhile exercise, but in the meantime one to ponder. I've had a chat with a friend of mine in Finland and he says he knows of no glass company in Scandinavia producing this type of work and he's in the trade up there, so it looks like that area can be ruled out.

Hi Paul,
I tried emailing on the Seguso websites, but only got 1 reply from Seguso Vetri. It said that they could not identify any Archimede Seguso pieces because they were another company. I thought they would give me an email to contact the appropriate person or website that could help, but didnt get anything.
If you have an any info on who to contact that would be great!

Hi Javier this is the e-mail address I've had most success with, but I think it depends on the language skills of whoever is on duty on certain days.

the person who won it, said 100% it was Seguso and they know what there on about as they wrote the book
-
I certainly hope he's right as it is far less com[licated if copies are not around, this is difficult enough without added complications.

Can the images associated with these posts be added either to GlassGallery or the topic here as new posts please? It's such a shame as they have gone as this is an interesting topic worth keeping.
