Hi,
Just wondered if anyone had a clue to the signature on the base of this pink glass vase? It will be pretty modern I expect and might be Scottish but that's all I can surmise.... any further help would be great! Thank you in anticipation!

Welcome to the board. Nice clear sig picture but a picture of the whole thing always helps too... ;D
-
thank you Lustrousstone :)
Here's my best attempt at the whole shebang!

That's a classic Caithness vase in neodymium glass. The signature is likely to be the engraver but I can't make it out.
-
Aha! So it is Caithness - I wondered, but assumed it would have the Caithness name somewhere, or even a sticker attached! Perhaps it did once upon a time... thank you Lustrousstone, you're help has been much appreciated today ;D

I think it says Nole Dole or Role 99 (Could be 77)
but don't know anything about Caithness so I'm not sure who it might be. Sorry.
The nearest to that name I could find is Norman Orr but I've no idea whether he might have done something like this I'm afraid.

Looking here it doesn't say he did anything for Caithness glass so possibly a red herring.

Thank Flying Free :)
Interesting ideas regarding the signature (if that's what it is).... I read it as Nougy !!! I think your suggestions are much better, i particularly like Roll or Noll followed by a number (99 or 77), could be a pattern number of some sort perhaps. So much food for thought!

Looking at the Caithness book indicates that the design is sand blasted, not engraved. The number is most likely the date, 1999, but the list of engravers and sandblasters is no help, but does imply it's not complete.

Ah, that would make sense and fit with the time period I had in mind. The vase was my mums and I knew it wasn't something I had seen as a child so felt it must have been a more contemporary purchase. I think it may be a 'seconds' as it has what I think is a flaw in the glass around the rim but 'inside' the glass i.e no roughness or chip to feel when you run a finger around the edge. It doesn't matter to me, I just wanted to find out a bit more about what it was and where it came from. Thank you both for your help and experience I am very grateful x :)

A second is unlikely to be sand blasted; it would have been rejected before that. And if the sandblasting was second, then unsigned.
-
oh, that's interesting! Perhaps it has had a knock, although it's strange I don't feel any damage. There is so much to learn, I am so glad I found this forum. thanks again!

I don't know if this the same type of thing but this one is signed with a number and then just signed 'orchid'

Just wondering if there is any way Dole Role or Nole might be the name of a flower lol :), the flower engraved on the bowl. But can't think of any that would match at the moment.

The sig. might read ' Rose ' perhaps :)
-
Yes! I think you've hit the nail on the head. I'm sure it does say 'rose'.....in a scrawled way!! I've gone from 'nougy' to 'rose 99'. I think the latter make much more sense !
Thank you again for your input and sensible suggestions. Now, I wonder...who is Nougy? ;)
-
Well done Mike ;D I was tired last night so 'Rose' just didn't even occur to me.

Well, I thought it read Roselyn and couldn't work out why the first part of the name wasn't joined up to the last part... then I realised that the first part was rose ::) The last two might be the artists initials rather than 99 ? . Not that I know anything about Caithness glass :-\ . I have seen examples on ebay with the artist's initials though as opposed to numbers.
