Title: magnifying weight date please?
Post by: bat20 on April 01, 2014, 12:51:02 PM
I tell you what, the canes are subtle on this one!,joking aside does anyone know the date on this ,it seems like it may be older with black in the scratches and a white stone trapped in the metal,it's also heavy with a shallow concave pontil running to a very thin edge with alot of wear,3.5 ht and 6.5 wd of foot, but it is mushroom shaped so a little wider, many thanks.

Hi

I have had a good number of similar pieces from job lots, and concluded that they dated to anywhere between 1800 and 1950, and maybe earlier or later....and that I had no idea how to decide how old they were! Any defintive suggestions welcome.

Incidentally, I gave all mine to charity shops...

Alan

Yes indeed, not alot to go on is there,i guess it would have to be colour, wear, shape and bits and bobs in the glass,i think this is an early one and you could imagine it being used to read the "Thunderer"'or the like.

Plain paperweights, magnifying and otherwise, pop up in numerous old catalogues, so your're on a hiding to nothing really

The shape is typical for those tourist paperweights with a photograph, postcard, print of a building or monument stuck on the base.

Wuff,i saw one very similar today with a black and white photo of a european gentleman dressed up as a Chinese gentleman and on the back a date of 1922,it did feel alot lighter but the same shape and curve underneath,of course you can't say they started off life together. :)

At the risk of boring everyone to death, you can always change the channel ;)i've come across a few now and one with Queen Vicky underneath, those do have a curve but at the outer edge a small vertical ledge to hold a photo or the like, they are much lighter than the old magnifying ones imho that don't have the ledge and without the mushroom cap shape. :)

I have recently visited my sister-in-law, who has a large number of these old tourist weights. The glass, of course, is a magnifying glass - that's the purpose 8).
