Hi,
Interesting vase but nothing like my usual stuff! I have no idea where to start with this - cannot find anything that resembles it ???
11" high, top diameter 3.25", circumference at fattest 21.75" - slightly lop sided, base diameter just over 2.25".
Beautifully ground out pontil mark and base and polished - age wear to base.
Extremely heavy - suspect high lead content.
The rim is cut and polished (not sure of the exact terminology - sorry) and approx 9mm thick.
It appears to have an inner layer (approx 1.5mm) which is very speckly with small blobs of colour, only a very few small air bubbles. there then appears to be a thick clear casing, on the surface of which the coloured enamels have been applied (you can feel the texture) - this gives a sort of 3D aspect to the glass.
Any ideas much appreciated,
Roberta

no mark at all?
It does look a bit like some of our very own Adam Aaronson's early work, I've certainly seen a large purple (over some white) vase with very similar textures of enamels in it - sort of cloudy in a powderpuff-y cumulus-stretched a bit at the edges kind of way - practically impossible to describe!
But a way of working the enamels in, in a way I know Adam can produce. I don't know of anybody else who can make it come out this way.
-
Ooh, thought it was older than that somehow, but it does look very much like his effect and colours, just not come across that shape.
Thank you, will ask him!

I'm fairly sure the purple vase I saw was dated '92...
I rather hoped, now we've beeen talking about him, he might pop in. But he's a very busy man, ;D
not here every day.

It's almost certainly not lead glass. I don't think studio glass is
-
A great deal of Studio Glass is lead crystal, nowadays Christine.
It's softer than other types and much easier to work... :)

Hi,
I've sent him an email to ask him to look if he has the time!
It is so similar in colours and technique to some of his stuff - I just googled images for his glass. Surprisingly I thought it was much older.
Does anyone know why it is so heavy!
Thanks,
Roberta
-
It does look like an early piece of mine, probably between 1988 and 1992. Well spotted, Sue.
;-)
Christine, until around 1995, most UK studio glass was lead crystal - almost everyone used Dartington cullet, but that's another story!
-
Ok, typed at the same time - so it probably has a high lead content hence the weight!
-
OK, my apologies - waste not want not eh?
-
Thank you Adam and everyone else, I thought it was one I would never get to the bottom of and it was easily solved ;D.
THANKS!!!!!

Just don't expect this quick an answer for everything, Roberta! ;D
You have even had the maker themself confirming attrubution - and all within about 1.5 hours of putting the image up!
-
I know, I am completely amazed!
I seen things go backwards and forwards for months, endlessly discussed but still no positive attribution - I thought this was going to be one of those. To have the man himself ID it is fantastic ;D
I'm a very happy bunny, just need to sort out some lighting to display it properly now!

I have my own piece of Adam's work right in front of me. :)
It sits on the mantlepiece behind my pc.
So from where I sit, it is plonk in the middle, just above my screen.
It's a much more recent piece, though. Another thing to add to my growing list of things I must photograph for the board. I'll add a pic here for you, when I've got one. :)

A very special one!

;) I know, ;D but the story can wait until I can actually show it to people Adam.
It will mean a lot more when properly illustrated. 8)

A very special one ???
I'm dying to see a picture now! you must get your camera out soon :D
Got mine off ebay - just thought it looked really interesting with the use of the colours and the effect, was thrilled when it turned up, now I'm even more so!

Keep your fingers crossed the sun comes out tomorrow.
I bought mine directly from Adam, at the Fair in Cambridge in 2005. It's called "Thames, Midnight" and it is Adam's interpretation in glass of a W. Turner painting of the river.
It worked, beautifully. 8) 8) 8)
The really sad side of the story, (now it's coming out anyway ::)) is that Adam wasn't been able to do it again - or at least couldn't get another to work out so well, at the time.
It was nearly 9 years ago, Adam. Any joy since?

I have just posted my complete collection of Adam's work on Facebook Roberta, ... if you are a member, do feel free to take a look. Many of the pieces date back to the early days at Turnmill Studios in London and there is also a special ellie with a rose in his trunk made for me at his new studio just a short drive from our home.
It was finding an elephant that had a resemblance to Wedgwood ellies that first introduced me to Adam's work, here is the early link Roberta, where you can see what a lovely sense of humour Adam has.

Rosie. :) (Coincidently, I was going to be named Roberta after my uncle Robert!)

Hi,
I'm not a facebook member but my other half is, so will have a look tonight.
I was named after my great uncle Robert - my mum was convinced I was a boy so I was meant to be a Robert too, then hurriedly changed when I was a girl.
Adam sounds like a bit of a teaser, I would have fallen for that too ;D
