Hi, I picked this up at an auction house along with a Georgian oil lamp that I coveted. The auctioneer reckoned it to be Victorian but it has an Edwardian feel to me i.e. early 20th century. It has a slightly amethyst tint to the glass, stands 31 cm (12.5 inches) tall and is hollow. Any pointers as to where it was made or by whom would be appreciated.

regret I can't help Neil - but very unusual proportions..........doesn't appear to have been made with stability in mind.

Hi Paul, yes, it's very tall and also wobbly on the foot. It has a presence though, and a glass expert I showed it to recently thought it might be of the period around Constance Spry, the garden designer. I'm just hoping that somebody recognises it.

The only attribution suggestion being, Ivo (whose knowledge of world glass, is generally better than most),
"Italian decorative glass which goes by the brand name "VID "- I have several items from them. I think it may be the same company which produces decorative Grappa bottles."
The hollow spiral nature of the pieces is strikingly similar, as is the decorative impractical design, my piece is totally absurd not practical. Oddly, too, my piece came in a collection of Georgian-Victorian glass...... but the VID suggestion, if properly understood, I take to mean more 1970's onwards.
It is really odd that a glass company would take the time to delicately blow non functional pieces that almost look functional but it seems they did (or even do)
