Title: Large cranberry uranium glass lidded pot help please.
Post by: brucebanner on May 10, 2014, 03:38:43 PM
Can anybody help me with this please, it has wear to the base, a rough pontil and the frilled edges and the lid handle glow under UV light, and i'm not sure what it's intended use was or age.

It's 7 inches in width and 4 1/4 inches in height

Covered preserve dish were my first thoughts, possibly Victorian.

It's probably a powder bowl, but yes Victorian and likely British. It reminds me of this in that the cranberry is closer to ruby and because of  it's slight clumsiness

I'm intrigued by the name of your example Christine :)  -  Is that just a personal thing, or does it have a sticker saying 'I'm Audrey' ;)
I was going to say that this seems large for a powder bowl but, apparently, many years later than this was made (presumably), Bagley did a 7" powder bowl in what they called 'CRYSTALTYNT', so guess some girls get through a lot of powder.         Can't find anything in Gulliver to match, and S. & F. didn't appear to stock such pieces, and seems too big for Barrie Skelcher.             It's an attractive piece, and think they used to make good money if undamaged.

Date wise, pieces such as shown by Chris always seem to end up being quoted as c. 1880.

It's a Leni joke. Audrey is from the Little Shop of Horrors. Powder bowls were large because they held the fluffy powder puff and loose powder. http://www.abfabs.com/vintage-pink-swansdown-powder-puff-ivorine-knop-sold-207-p.asp
