Post by: bat20 on May 17, 2014, 05:18:49 PM
Hi all, this glass has strong relief with a cross hatching background,i can only find one faint seam but it also has a hand cut base with a polished pontil?,any ideas how it was made ???,it's a clear bright metal with some very small air bubbles and a high pitched ring,it's also heavy, any thoughts many thanks.

The Gothic pattern has been used by several makers, including louis zoude and saint louis. The pontil finish is good - early pressed glass was taken out of the machine by pontil, after abt. 1850 they found an easier way to release the product. The intricate pattern was needed to hide the quality problems caused by hot glass and cold moulds - another problem that was solved later on.
Hope you have a real one - the pattern has been widely reproduced in italy and portugal since the mid sixties.
