Hi all,i've acquired these to glasses recently and with a little research i think their flip glasses,a type of cocktail that was drunk over the pond, i think, they are about 13 ht and 8 wd broken pontils with a slight ring, they have a charming folk art quality about them and the ship engraving is very effective and in keeping with the whole feel of them, anyone know much about this type of glass and what age they maybe, they've got a 18th century feel about them but the wear to bases say more recent.
-
My guess would be Swedish or Portugese.

I've come across another of these"stiegal type"pieces recently,it's about 13cm ht alot more wear to the base and a lighter colour, the sailors have different hats and there is a thinner wavy line, does anyone know much about this type of glass and possible dates, many thanks.

I think Ivo is doing more than guessing. These have flooded the eastern U.S. market (NY, NJ, PA) during the past two years, always the same greenish cast & primative ship cutting & have been reportedly documented as Portugese imitations of South Jersey & Stiegal type glass which is a bit strange because that market has been soft for quite some time in the U.S.

Yup, i've been trying to get to the bottom of these for ages the first two seem more modern with a deeper green and the last a lot lighter green with alot of wear,do people think these are modern then?

Hi ,
Yep very modern , a few years ago I saw similar being made in the south of Spain with the same decoration ,
cheers ,
Peter.

Ok thanks, when i found the first two i searched the internet and found one sold for over 200 dollars with alot of spiel about them, but when you look further the real ones are very different, i still feel sorry for the guy with it in his cabinet telling all his mates about the history!
