Title: ID Help - complex canes peppermint swirl ball & torsade. ID = Saint Louis
Post by: LesBeatiques on May 26, 2014, 11:16:05 PM
Hello all,

The quality of the torsade and the unusual motif were what originally caught my eye. My impression was bohemian or possibly Val St Lambert but the more I examine the weight the more I'm at a loss.

It is roughly 3" in diameter and 1-7/8" tall and rests on a flat semi polished base.

Thanks for all the help.
Eric

Hi Eric,

I always thought this type of 'panelled' weights to be antique Saint Louis. I cannot remember seeing the torsade before though.

Hi.  This is a classic antique Saint-Louis design with a 'turban' centre cane.  The torsade is usally present, but due to the placement is rarely visible from above - in one I have the torsade is even lower in the dome.

I have heard it said that the torsade was intended to hide the sometimes obvious join between the pick-up and the casing glass, but that may be no more than speculation.

Very interesting, I would never of guessed. I've always thought of Saint Louis weights to be very well executed, precise and well organized. I've got much to learn!  Mind = blown

Thanks so much for all the help.
