Title: Murano fish?
Post by: Sendhandfran on May 30, 2014, 08:48:30 AM
Hi, I've always thought these were Murano, but read they could be chinese.
Can anyone tell which this is?
And why? :)

Thank you

Lol. Romanian. I never knew that or could possibly of guessed.
May i ask how you tell.
I've seen so many described as Murano, i just took it that they were. It wasn't until i read a post here that found they could be Chinese.

Fran there is someone on here that has a massive collection of these fish iirc.
They posted a thread with pics on.
Some have been seen with a Romania label I believe.
If you do a board search hopefully you'll find the thread :)  I've not time to look at the mo, but will try later if you've not found it.

Thanks flying free. That sounds like the perfect link for this. I tried searching Murano glass fish & glass fish looking for the one very like this one here, but not found it yet.
Note to self..
if I'd posted on it i could trace it!

The slightly dull colours are typical Romanian, as is the bluish clear glass but there is a wide range of style and shape variations . Many of the "Murano" baskets are Romanian too. They are still churning them all out I think. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-MURANO-MULTI-COLOURED-GLASS-BASKET-VASE-8-INCHES-/111200966197

Interesting. Do you think the baskets not Murano either? Its funny how they can be misidentified so often that eventually they all become Murano.

I have a fabby contemporary Romanian glass fish, its label reads "Handmade by Sticlart PC3", but it's got quite a lot of metal bits attached.
It's not remotely the same as these older ones, with splodgy coloured bits throughout.
I've seen these attributed to Nialsea quite often, not that I've ever been convinced.

Hi sue. I can't imagine one with metal bits. Do you have it posted? How old would you say this is? I thought probably not very if they're still being made.

Thanks for the link flying free. They're very similar. I noticed on Keith's and others i found the top fins aren't as pointy as this one. I wonder if that could help pin it down. I'm still looking for the 'Chinese' one i found...

No, and I don't have a pic. I'll have to take one for you.
It came from TKMaxx, it was a birthday present and it lives on top of the downstairs loo cistern.
(under a blanket of dust which will need seen to before it poses for its portrait. ::))

Funny you should say tkmax, they had a lovely Murano dish there once, i wish I'd got it now, it wasn't very expensive but large & i can't afford Every bit of glass i like & don't have much space. But i was very surprised to find such a nice piece of glass at TKmax. I wouldn't have thought look there for new glass.

Much of my Beranek collection came from TKMaxx.
When I discovered the Tropical Flowers for just £5 each, I ended up making two trips into town on the same day to get 6 of them home. They were not easy to carry on the bus!
I also got a couple of lovely large Tarnowiec vases I use as wastpaper baskets.
These days, though I mostly only go to see what to avoid on "antique" stands, and to see how glass from the far east is developing in sophistication.

Lol. Interesting tactics. What a good idea. i was fascinated looking at the glass in there. Usually i avoid the place unless i need clothing or bedding, i never even knew they sold glass until recently. Its a learning curve alright.
