Title: TINY ETCHED FLOWER VASE
Post by: bat20 on June 05, 2014, 05:10:28 PM
Hi all,i can't make this little 9cm oval vase out,it looks old but has no wear to the base,no shear mark or polished pontil, just a 1.5cm circle, the top is flat with a slight bevel so maybe a bohemian piece.I hope you can see the etching that to me looks like ferns growing out of a couple of toilets ???,i think it maybe soda glass, but not sure, any thoughts many thanks .

I can't help, but I'm laughing so hard, they ARE growing out of toilets!

Thank you for the laugh!

It's engraved not etched and I think it's a glass not a vase and English. Perhaps late 1830s onward when pteridomania kicked off

Ahh,i did mean to say engraved, promise, well that certainly pre dates the close coupled toilet!,i have to admit the glass bit surprises me as i haven't seen one like it before with a very narrow opening at the top and such a flat rim, nice surprise though ,thanks. What sort of drink would this glass have been made for?

I take the glass back because I hadn't realised it was flattened  :-[

As long as that's all!! It's probably for violets; you see violet vases in lots of the catalogues

we're not talking a rummer here Christine.... ;)is the circle on the base something to do with putting a foot on an oval shape i wonder.

Circle is just the remains of the glass blob used to stick it to the punty iron. Just not polished off.

There is an scholarly article of fern vases on-line somewhere, search with Scotland/Scottish as one of the words. Not saying it is Scottish though.

Truthfully i still don't get it to be honest,do you mean broken off and then reheated, coz there's no sharp bits, the other odd thing about it i think is the total lack of any wear. ???

Look at the outside edges with a loupe; I bet you find plenty of wear.

It doesn't sit on the very edge Christine, more middle of the foot and it strangely hasn't got a hint of wear, but everything about it looks old,i guess it might be a piece that for some reason was never used?

Yes broken off, then fire polished. But if it is not sitting properly, perhaps a second. Odd the engraver did not fix that.  Did think Strathearn as they did the shape but not with a cut rim.

I'm not sure there was a properly Frank,it sits flat ,just not on the outer edge.
