Hi Don

I have had a couple of very similar paperweights in the past, but I ended up giving them to the charity shop, so I do not have images (doh!).  Based on Peter von Brackel's books, I had concluded that they were most likely from Bohemia / Czechoslovakia, late 19th century. That said, I would not rule out the Belgium / Alsace area.

Thanks Alan. It actually belongs to a friend who was interested in its origin and I knew where to get an answer. It is old as the hole would not take a modern/recent European candle, so would have been used with the old tallow candles which were of a smaller diameter... I told him to look after it, as we may be needing candles in the future...
thanks

As the hole seems to open out rather than being parallel sided is it perhaps an inkwell rather than a candle holder?
