Title: How do you display your weights?
Post by: smilingwolf on June 12, 2014, 04:10:48 PM
Beginning collector here ....

I assume that many on this board own dozens if not hundreds of weights. Do you display them all? How? (Are there standardized shelving units - preferably with a light?). So far, I'm using a bookcase, but I'm looking for the ideal ...

Also, is there a place on this site to view photos of the collections of others? I'd love to be able to see them!

Thanks,

Meg

Welcome Meg,

My weights are set among my general clear and coloured glassware, on top of ..
- table between the computer and the keyboard
- spare piano stool
- compact freezer unit
- sideboard
- music and video cabinet
- TV stand
- video / DVD recorder
- upper surface of a music station
- wall shelves
- compact set of bookshelves
- clear plastic stands
- wardrobe
And also in ...
- cupboards
- plastic bags in built in wardrobes
And most conveniently ...
- on various patches of floor space

Many of our paperweights are displayed inside lighted curio cabinets with glass shelves. Others are displayed inside tables that have glass tops. Some of our earliest acquisitions have moved out of doors to decorate the garden.

Hi. I have one of the little Chinese butterfly paperweights partially embedded in the wall of our house, so it looks like there is a butterfly resting on the wall.

Alan...so you don't have a 1858 church weight under your house's footings too? The illusion is shattered ???  :)

Hi,
just a boring set of shelves in my den as I am banned from using most of the house. Pic attached.

Cheers,

Tony

Hi All, I display my weights on a windowsill (yes, I throw caution to the wind too) and my wife just refers to them as 'blobs of glass'. She also says "do we really need all these blobs of glass? we haven't that much paper to hold down"

Hi Meg
I found these superb cabinets to display my weights, they are called Tapley 33, made in the UK, and can be found on Ebay. They have a special fitting so you can hang them upside down. You put one cabinet up and if the door opens to the left and you want the other opening to the right you simply hang it the other way up if you see what I mean.
I bought some clear plastic risers so that the back row of weights on each shelf can be raised in order to see them properly and you can see how they look in this picture
Hope you find a nice way of displaying yours
Dave

I should just clarify there are two cabinets in the first picture with doors opening left and right. These cabinets are made in various styles so here is a picture of another one

Thanks, you all made me smile reading the responses.

Kevin H - funny!
Antonia - I never thought about garden art. Yes, a curio cabinet with glass shelves and lights would best show the weights in all their glory.
Alan - now that's creative!
Tony - your shelves look anything but boring with all those beauties.
Don - I'm sure you would prefer "gardens" of glass.
Dave - your shelving looks fantastic. Glass shelves really seem to do the trick with presentation!

Thank you for sharing your photos - my heart does a crazy pitter patter when I see shelves of weights. I must be in the right place.

As everyone else, I have "Curio Cabinet-itis" as my preferred display preference.... {currently at 7}

.... BUT, within those cabinets I found a nice little item that helps display the back rows neatly, and so they individually show above those in front of them.

These "Cabinet Organizers" are clear lucite, sturdy, and you can line them up for shelving of different lenghts. I get mine from AMAZON online, and they are about $10US with free shipping for Prime Members. Made by InterDesign, and actually made for spice racks...go figure, grin!

Hi.

We use a mixture of modern style wall hung cabinets, repro Georgian cabinets, and bookcase shelves, as well as window cills, and other odd places.  We used to crowd too many pieces onto a shelf, but by reducing the density you do not really need risers.

Using a reproduction cabinet means you can happily cut holes in the top and install downlighters...

One caveat about lighted curios - next time, I would buy one that has at least two lights up top. Ours have one light. I have had to do some creative placement so that the weights on the top shelf don't cast shadows on those below. Same thing for the weights on the second shelf casting shadows on the third shelf, etc. That said, our displays still look beautiful with just the one light. We also have clear lucite risers (eBay and Amazon) for the back rows on each shelf. For the lower shelves, we like to use the layback stands - you can see more of the paperweight that way. The usual upright stands work best for the weights at eye level and higher. I could go on and on - I love paperweights!
