Title: Latticino Paperweight....What? and Who?
Post by: petet63 on June 13, 2014, 09:38:11 PM
Hi, I picked this up more out of curiosity, I must stop doing that, than anything else. Looks like some kind of Shellfish to me. 9cm wide and 4 high. A rough Pontil and no marks that i could find. Any clues and comments...nice comments... welcome  ;D ;D

Possibly a student piece trying out ideas.

This is the cut off end created when a cane pick up is pinched down with jacks like what is done on a crown weight.

Thanks for the help all. I moved it on so someone as curious as me has it now. Student trying out seems the best bet. Bits of left overs maybe   ??? Didn't know whether to love or loathe it but still interesting.

Sach explained what it is, waste in effect. It is then obvious, as well as a clear illustration of how they got the name crown weight!

As Sach says, this is definitely a cut-off. Most likely from a paperweight but it could be the cut of from a blown piece. It could have been made by a master or a student, but as a by product, this is really irrelevant as you would need the actual piece to know.

One of the fascinating things about the glassblowing process is that you create what are effectively glass "tools" that are used for a purpose on the journey towards the finished piece. These are usually discarded. Some people save them and use them as inclusions in other pieces.

Just think...there would have been one of these for every crown weight produced! But most of these will have ended up in the bin. Some people might say that makes them rare....a whole collecting area that has been overlooked.
