Title: Pair of decanters poss early 19C ??
Post by: carolglass on June 17, 2014, 06:03:48 AM
Greetings, would like some questions answered by more informed people than myself
A matched pair of reasonable clear glass decanters with some seeding -  24.5cm high including stopper/21cm without, base is 9cm diameter with usual wear indicating some age. Cut panels shoulder and bottom with a star cut base and three hand applied rings to the neck. Stopper is mushroom shaped with a coarsely ground stem to fit. Measurements same for both as well as description.
I have found the same design in G Bernard Hughes book English, Scottish and Irish Table Glass page 303, pic 229 second row second in from the left.
Now are these early 19C or Victorian or later reproductions??
Any information would be welcome.
regards from a picture perfect Napier- Carol

quote...............   "hand applied rings to the neck."   ...     are you certain  - we've discussed this recently, and it's not always easy to be sure, and can make a difference to the age.        Assuming you're correct, then this alone should probably answer your question regarding the date.
However, I'm not entirely sure about the stopper  -  this coarsely ground stub just might indicate that it's a replacement - does it fit well and sit appropriately in the neck?      Does the top of the stopper show any wear, and is the colour the same as that of the body?

Nice bottles though, and I agree they do appear to match the GBH example. :)

Paul, many thanks for your input-
the rings I have had another good look at, and  there is a small amount of cutting in short brick shaped panels in between  the first and second rings which would indicate later application of the rings. There are miniscule variations  in the placement of the glass rings and striations to indicate the overlap of the applied glass and smoothed out, so I am happy with my "hand applied" description- always good to have critique though. Very comfortable to pour from as the rings are quite deep.

The stoppers- different matter- there is a small amount of movement when they are seated, having said that the glass is a good match colour wise. I would hazard a guess they are a good replacement.
Again my thanks and regards from NZ- Carol

Hi ,
Quote  "  there is a small amount of cutting in short brick shaped panels in between  the first and second rings which would indicate later application of the rings"

I think you will find this is an incorrect assumption, rings however made are done when the decanter was made  , all the hot work being done at the same time , the cutting would be done after .

cheers ,
             Peter.

Thanks Peter, that was an assumption as the space between the rings is tiny, thanks for clearing that up. Regards from a now sunny Napier- Carol
