Title: Amber Glass Pitcher, Blue Spiral Handle ID = Portieux, George Sand

Pretty sure this jug which I bought at a car boot sale today is Victorian, lots of bubbles, wear to base, polished pontil etc. However wondering if it's possible to attribute to a particular factory or country.

Hi Roy,

We have a similar one in a lemonade or water set. We bought that as a continental set but my opinion is: it is possibly American. I think it just about the combination of colours.

Thank you for the reply. I was thinking continental and hadn't even considered American however it may well be. Have seen a few listed on antique sites and they're all unattributed so guess we may never know  ???

Ivo reckons such things in this colour combination are usually Portieux

But is there confirmation of Portieux?

Internet opinions vary. Some suggest Legras or La Rochere as possibilities. Searching for "Portieux" alone seems to show nothing much in the George(s) Sand "style".

The original is by Portieux and in production off and on for 180 years, the replicas are by La Rochère, and Legras does not enter the picture @ all as far as I know.
