Title: cut glass tumbler
Post by: bat20 on June 29, 2014, 10:43:52 AM
Hi all, this glass is an odd one to me ,it has a grey tint, afew air bubbles and sharp cutting, leans to one side with the line between the cutting and glass done with very little care leaving little chips from the cutting, although the pattern itself looks well done? It's quite thick and heavy and leaded to a degree and maybe a bohemian type base, sorry about the images, any thoughts.

What do you mean by a Bohemian style base?

the standring is where the mould closes - so the item is pressed. check for vertical seams as well - they may have been polished over.

It is the standard finish of all Sklo Union vases - but has been in use for a very long time, and in many different places.

Holding it up to the light you can see faint vertical lines every 1cm or so ,sort of like mould blown type,it also has horizontal striation lines from being worked i imagine, more pronounced at the top 1".Antwerp on some glass i've found from that area you get a flat area of about 3mm on the edge of the base and then a polished out pontil in between, not saying this is a polished pontil though, and my musings on glass should not be taken too seriously ;) ;D

Ivo,do you think it's pressed and then cut?

Most cut glass started out life as a mould blown blank, so yes, 100% certain it is moulded. But I am unable to see if there has been subsequent wheel cutting or if the whole product is fully moulded. You'd need to handle it and check under magnification.

Ivo

Your comment the production of 'blanks' prior to cutting made me think about one of my glasses. What do you think about the first one originally being a blank, which was rejected, for cutting. Yhe shape of the glass reminds me of the shape typical of glasses from Silesia - see second glass.
