Title: Help reading production number on Strombergshyttan vase.
Post by: goodgiven on June 29, 2014, 09:59:16 PM
Hi,

I need help reading the production number on a small Strombergshyttan vase I have. It's 12 cm tall, 7 cm wide at the top, and 1.4 cm thick. I can't make out whether it says b1158, b158 or v158. My understanding is that Strombergshyttan production numbers don't go above B954, however, it looks like says b1158.

Thanks for your assistance.

I would be fairly certain that someone has been trying to improve the value of an unmarked piece by using a "Dremel".  I have 10 pieces of Stromberg and only one has a rough signature like yours.  All the rest are engraved neatly.  A second worry is that all of my Stromberg pieces have signatures that follow the edge.  they do not go Straight like yours attempts - and runs out of room to complete.  I have attached 4 pictures of signatures :-

Oops pushed the wrong key:-

(1)   B868 vase signed - the roughest of all
(2)   Sorry it is not the best focus
(3)   Of an E127 decanter signature
(4)   from a Viking ship small vase.

Welcome to the forum.

I am not convinced the signature does not belong, can we see a photo of the whole vase? That might help a bit.

Adding a Stromberg sig to a small vase like that is not going to add much value, at least it seems an odd choice to me. Saying that, stranger things have happened...

Thanks John,

Yes, most Strombergshyttan signatures seem to follow the edge. I have noticed that. Thanks for the images. I'm wondering if this a really early piece, B158 or B168. The bottom of the vase still has the label except it's faded. However, you can still make out the Strombergshyttan name as well as the word, Sweden. It also has the blue tinge that's peculiar to this glass. The bottom of the vase is 4 cm. I've attached the images of the vase. The vase weighs 1 lbs, 15 oz. despite it's small size.

Thanks again for your help.

if it is B158 it would be 1937

I think I should have said, thanks for the images and information, Ross.

Do you know when the production numbers start, in single digits or double digits? I've seen that first mark that looks like a 'W' before, on other production numbers on Stromberg vases. It is possible that the last two letters are B8? Do the production numbers go that low?

Thanks again everyone for your help.

numbering started 1936 and the highest number for B (Blomvase) in that year was 111.

Thanks Ivo,

You say the highest number for that year was 111. So 111 is not the starting number, it's the final number? If that's so, is it possible for the numbers to be lower than 111?

112 is the starting number for 1937 - if you really want that level of detail I suggest you get your mittens on a copy of Helmut Ricke's Swedish Glass Production Catalogues.
