Title: Mysterious Art Deco (?) vase - help pls!
Post by: Valsky on July 12, 2014, 08:25:39 PM
Hi, I hope someone out there may recognise this or know something about this vase as I'm stumped!  ??? The vase is massive (10"h/8"w) and weighs 2.1kg.  The body is of clear glass which has a frosted finish on the outside, though is clear and smooth inside.  The design is 'applied' to the exterior and is in muted grey/beige/mauve colours - there is an 'art deco' geometric design and an image of an iris.  There is a signature / manufacturer name but it is v worn/faded.  There is no pontil mark but I guess this may have disappeared if the vase was acid dipped(?).

Pictures included so please take a look and send me your best guess!
Thanks for your time,
V

hello v - welcome to the GMB from me as well :)

looking at the colour and blotchiness around the foot rim of your vase, it reminds me a little of the modern acid stained glass that is known to come from eastern Europe and parts of the middle east - see this link where Ivo suggests some of the names to search for  ........

I could be wrong, but certainly that foot rim effect does look very similar.

Hello Paul
Thank you for the welcome and for taking a look at this for me. I'm not 100% convinced with that connection though - I've owned a piece of Reuven glass before and there are definite differences with this vase. It's quite difficult to describe (and this doesnt come across im the pics) but it has the feel of a vintage piece. Also - the areas of colour do not flow or spread but have been applied and almost feel 'flaky'. I've just not seen anything close enough to this to theorize. Also it is extremely heavy which is unusual for modern piece.

I wish the signature were clearer!  I will look into your suggestions some more though...

Thank you very much.
