Title: Colourful Tricorn Bowl - Possibly Skrdlovice
Post by: Pinkspoons on July 16, 2014, 03:40:52 PM
A recent acquisition - a quite large and colourful tricorn-form bowl.

135mm tall / 185mm diameter, it has a bold 'splash' like decoration thickly cased in clear glass. The base is polished flat.

It has a Skrdlovice feel to it, but I couldn't find an exact match... just a few broadly similar motifs attributed to Jelinek.

A shove in the right direction would be most welcome.

The motif is also very similar to the one in a (major) Ladislaw Oliva design.
And the shape is very Milan Metalec (sp??)
I'd suspect you're on the right track with Skrodlovice.

Quite a stunning piece, Nic. Lovely find.

Thanks for taking a look, Sue! It's very pretty - it was squirreled away on eBay with a loose Orrefors attribution.

I did have a look at some of Oliva's designs, but the closest matches have the decoration very much in three dimensions on the outer surface of the vase.

Google images did cough up this on Pinterest - apparently linked to from the GMB, but I couldn't find it with a forum search:

I was thinking of this one.

I've had a good look through Jindrich and BoBA's book, there is a piece on p37, a unique cased bottle by Blecha, not recorded in the books that has some features sort of in common - graal-like elongated bits, encased in different colours - and the puce looks similar.

I'm sure somebody will know. It's too fabby a piece for it not to be attributable. ;D

Not Skrdlovice, and not Czech at all I think...
These turn up frequently on ebay Germany, and I think they are from Murano. And maybe not that old...
>> Dirk has shown a similar vase here, (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,49739.0.html) no final attribution, but there are some useful links in that thread :)

Oh, that's very nice, Sue - like being in a hydrothermal vent at the bottom of the ocean... without the deadly gasses and crushing pressure, obviously!

But I do see what you mean about similarity of motif.

Thanks for the link, Michael, will look into it now.  :)

I am surprised.
Sorry for butting in with irrelevancies.
(but my Oliva vase is always worth seeing.  ;)  It makes me think of loads of anonymous slaves in a mine, toiling away in a chain-gang 24/7, even upside-down... I shall try to think of it as deep sea vents from now on - far more cheerful.)

It is always a pleasure to see your vase, Sue! (I would show it off at any occasion if it were mine ;D )

I've done much trawling through books and the interweb for anything similar by Ferro & Lazzarini - as suggested by a link in the other thread - but nothing obvious has popped up thus far.

Would be a shame to consign it to the "Dunno" pile - it's far too nice.

It's well-established in my brain in case I do encounter an id.
Meanwhile, just enjoy it. :)

I have seen one of these with a "murano" label. However, that was being sold in Germany and most others appear there. I did meet someone said he had a positive ID labelled piece, confirming a German factory origin, but didn't say who. I prefer this (partial) explanation, as murano labels do get put on pieces in Italy to be sold to tourists and also by unscrupulous ebay sellers occasionally. So, for once, it seems a label can deceive and I prefer the German explanation now.... hopefully another labelled one will appear soon....

I am almost sure I have seen a similar design on one of the sypka glass catalogs. I know the attribution in those catalogs is not always correct though... I will try to find it and give more details.

Well, not quite.... I checked again, and it is not there. I know I saw this design before, but I guess it was an Ebay listing. So the mystery stays on.
