Title: Identification – Benny Motzfeldt
Post by: ulysses_88 on July 28, 2014, 06:33:55 AM
Hello,  New to this forum.  I have an unidentified bottle vase in the style of Benny Motzfeldt.  I was wondering if anyone could confirm this?

The piece is unmarked, has a ground but not highly polished pontil.  It has very interesting bubble patterns radiating out on all sides, which I believe is quite difficult to achieve. The bottle is square sided, quite irregular, and a little crude in parts. Glass is a little 'yellowish' in appearance. Quite thick and heavy for it's size. Have ruled out Erik Hoglund, so Benny Motzfeldt is my next guess.

Dimensions: 135mm tall approximately 85mm in diametre.

Thankyou for any suggestions.

Welcome to the forum.

Nice vase, sorry I can not help much. I would also look at the possibility of it being Italian, try searching using the term 'pulegoso'.

Hi and welcome from me too! :)
Can you make out any coloured (or blackish) inclusions - any tiny griity bits in or around the bubbles?
Could the bubble formation have been created by a metal or glass fibre mesh that has vapourised?

Could we please have an image of the base?

Your vase is not illustrated in the '84 book on BM, but I can really see where you're coming from, suspecting her.

LIke Sue, I can see why you're asking about Motzfeldt.  I also would say no to that, but you might consider Torbjorn Torgersen, who also worked for Randsfjordglass. The regularity of the bubbles is a little unusual. I'll attach what I think is a photo of fairly typical Torgersen piece.

Thankyou for the responses etc.  Attached are some further images. I've looked at 'pulegoso', I don't think it's as commercial as those pieces. It appears less refined, and more 'handcrafted' . I'm not familiar with Torbjorn Torgersen, but there is certainly no colour in this piece.  The smaller 'flecks' in the glass are just smaller bubbles which appear almost black. Thanks so much for your help though. I found this little image of a PLUS glass piece, which made me think it may have been Benny M.

[Mod: third party image for the PLUS piece now removed.]

umm, do you own the image of the PLUS piece?
We can end up with legal copyright problems on the board if images which belong to other folk are used without their permission.
It can be solved by adding a link to the webpage it comes from - thus keeping the image within the owner's copyright.

If you can't, I can take a pic of my vase which is the same design and post that.
It's a much bigger piece than yours, and contains spirals of bubbles created by the used of a mesh which had been cut into spiral shapes before being marvered onto the surface of the gather. It does have bits of blackish stuff around the bubbles, and goldy coloured shiney bits, and there are patches of diffuse white stuff too.

Thankyou Sue.  I shall try to delete the image in question.

Thankyou!

Don't worry!

Here's an image of my Benny Motzfeldt, the same design as the one ulysses_88 found.
I think my pic shows the detail a little better,  ;)
