I have tried to do some research on this bowl, mainly because it has the letters FK after the signature.
I have found out that FK was used on items that were sent to the USA.As yet I can not find a designer for the bowl.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thank you

Hello, If it is FK it may be Franck Kaj.
-
thanks Rosie. I have been a collector of kaj franck over the years and also have a couple of books about him but have never seen an image of that bowl.in one of the books it talks about a collection of glass by nuutajarvi called rista which carries the fk signature. they seem to think that fk is kaj franck but nothing definite.
maybe it is kaj franck unless anyone knows different.
thanks again.

I'm sure this is a Jaakko Niemi design

I will keep a look our for any further hints of the maker essi.
One of the problems with these lovely pieces of art glass is the fact that the Words Nuurajarvi Notsjo , so beautifully written, are not the signature of the maker, and neither are they inscribed by the maker of the piece, but by another member of staff, so all my lovely pieces by Jaakko Niemi have the Nuutajarvi Notsjo words in the very same handwriting, and indeed they also have Jaakko Niemi's name written in the same writing, so that does not help you at all.
I am desperately trying to think of another glass artist who might have worked for Nuutajarvi Notsjo with the initials FK.... but I agree that it does look more like a Jaakko Niemi design, and had there been no other initials on it I wouldn't have given it a second though.
Intriguing!

thanks to both of you for the input.i used google images after kisslikeethers reply ,and yes it is a jaakko niemi design.there is also one for sale at the moment from America.
has anybody any input on the FK that is added to the factory mark?
thanks again

Good news essi , I only manages to find this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1964-Jaakko-Niemi-J-Niemi-Nuutajarvi-Notsjo-Finland-Art-Glass-Mid-Century-Modern-/321480244926
So at least we know now why yours has FK and not KF on It if it isn't Kaj Francke!
So what does FK mean? The one I mentioned above... (possibly the one you found), does claim to have a mark on the side.... is it a 'nudge' or damage... does it look anything at all like your FK mark?
-
thanks Rosie, I think that persons "nudge" is most definitely damage.
the information about the FK mark is in the book,"Lasin taide, the art of glass, kaj franck,100 years.it says that the FK mark was applied to items intended for the USA.on my bowl the FK mark seems to have been written by different hand than the first part of the factory mark.the bowl that is being sold on ebay does not seem to have the FK mark at all.
any more input would be appreciated.

Hi Essi -
Rista is the series of thin walled vases with shallow cutting and / or engraving, designed in the 1950s. They're usually marked "Notsjoe FK".
There's a listing for a Rista vase here (the vase itself is unsigned but there are a couple useful catalogue images confirming the name of the series):

Your bowl is later, mid-60s. I agree the "FK" part on your bowl looks to be added in a different hand. The style of the remainder of the mark, "Nuutajärvi Notsjö", looks consistent with pieces made from mid-1965 onwards when items were just marked with the factory name, omitting the designer name / initials and date.

Thanks robbo for that reply,it helped me understand my error about the rista collection.
In the text it equates FK = Kaj Franc but I think the designer of my bowl is as kisslikeether said Jaakko niemi.
Do any members have some nuutajarvi items with the FK added?
thanks again
