Hi I just wanted to check if this is a Vasart or Strathearn L004 Cone Lamp Base please? http://www.ysartglass.com/Vascat/VasL001.htm It's definitely a lamp base as there is a single hole to the side of the glass near the base for a cable and the remnants of a light fitment to the top (but I don't know if that broken part is original to the glass?)
It has different millefiori canes and what looks like the whorls which Vasart and Strathearn can have, but in the description of the L004 lamp base, it lists sizes up to 10 and quarter inches but this one is just shy of 12 inches tall so I didn't know if this indicated that it may be a special or trial piece or maybe indicates that it is from another maker? It has no makers marks or labels but has a rough pontil mark to the base which I am not sure which glass that would indicate on the bases page? http://www.ysartglass.com/BaseLabel/Bases.htm ? I don't know much about Vasart, Strathearn and Ysart glass as all so I was hoping that someone can just confirm for me please? Thanks :) Chris

I think that is a Chic Young piece. http://ysartglass.com/Otherglass/ChicYoung.htm

Hi Frank thank you so much for your info :))
I've just read the article and it says about the tulip lamps he produced having a cut groove down the side, this has a neatly drilled circular hole and I think that the tulip lamps are those shades that go on metal stands or mounts?

Could this be one of the 2 sample bases that he made please which one contained a probable Perthshire cane (I've included other photos of the different canes that are within it, but if any more are needed of closer views, please let me know :D ) It does resemble the decor of the other shaped lamp base shown, but this has no impressed P that I can see but there is what I consider to be a circular scuff which looks a bit like a filled in upper section of a P possibly?
Many thanks
Chris :D

Sorry about the shot's not being that fantastic, my camera and my skills with it just are not good enough, but hopefully you can make it out enough? This is the base, with the closest that I could find to a vague part of a P, though there appears to be surface flakes of glass lost around the outer edge of the pontil mark so if a P was there, it would be gone with the missing glass? I'm not sure about the mark to the side of the pontil mark as it's totally filled in on the surface, like you get with hand signed items but lighter and isn't impressed, it may just be a graze? But to me, it does also resemble the top of a letter p so could it be the 'D' part of that letter? ???

Tulip laps are like L1 and L8 shown here http://ysartglass.com/Vascat/VasL001.htm in fact one shown here http://www.scotlandsglass.co.uk/cms/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=1442&category_id=185&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=6 (I lack dimensions for that one)
Drilled holes is how he did his bases. Vasart holes were hot pierced, sometimes with an extra piece of glass to reinforce. Never seen a lampbase that was sold with a shade.

Definitely not a tulip then :) Sorry I was thinking along the lines of a tulip lamp shade ::) I will try to contact him and see if he can give me any info about this base and let you know the outcome thank you :)

I doubt you can reach Chic Young, Gary Millar should be able to add something when he looks in here.

Ok then thanks for your help :)

Hi Chris,
I would second that this is a Chic Young / Perthshire paperweight piece - The impressed P is sometimes so unclear it just looks like a vague small hole from the centre of the 'P' depressed into the bottom - the canes can also often be difficult to make out clearly.

Hi Roberta and thanks for your input too :) Do you know if this is one of the 2 sample pieces that he made and are mentioned in the Ysartglass link that Frank kindly showed about Chic Young please or would it be a totally different 'Perthshire paperweight' piece and is it rare please? I know very little about Perthshire glass and nothing about Chic Young other than what I have read on the ysart glass website and what I have been told ??? I had initially bought this glass as I was curious and thinking it to be a possible Murano piece until I noticed the whorls and thought about Monart ect ::) Chris

yup 100% Perthshire paperweights lamp , I have around 12 plus perthshire lamps in my collection along with around 100 pieces of Perthshire paperweights vases, bowls etc, the conical shape was made in several different colours,
