Title: ID Help - IoW or not?

I had assumed that this well made but unlabelled paperweight was an Isle of Wight piece, but I cannot identify the design name.  Is that just me being blind, or is it by some other maker? Any thoughts?

It is 2 3/4 inch / 70 mm diameter. Deep translucent cobalt blue core, with the gold and red design encased by a thin layer of clear glass.  Neat circular polished base.

I would look elsewhere Alan, it is not a pattern from IoWSG as far as I know. That cobalt blue does not ring any bells, though canes and gold leaf are frequently found in weights made at the Studio, roughly from the 1980s onwards.

How rude not to reply, your nose out of joint by something I said?

Hi John.  My nose is fine - it has just been away for a few days....hence my limited contributions to the board.  I am always grateful for advice...

Hi Alan.

As it happens, I am on hols this week on the Isle of Wight, but no vibes about your weight.   I do not think it is IoW, but it might be related.   Have you considered Phoenician glass?

You could always ask Timothy Harris.  I think his new venture with brother Richard has its official opening next week in Arreton on IoW.

Sorry Alan.

There are a few other makers on the Isle of Wight but it does not strike me as being one of theirs either. Iestyn Davies left IoWSG and in the 1980s designed for Stuart Strathearn producing wares made with similar techniques to those used at IoWSG, saying that, I am not aware of any paperweights from SS.

Hi.  I feel it is of better quality than most examples that I have seen using this encased gold leaf technique, so I had ruled out Phoenician, but perhaps I need to look further into some of these various suggestions.

Hi.  I think you are spot on - mine is near identical, apart form the absence of the GES mark.  I know that the person it originally belonged to visited the US on sevral occasions, so that would fit.

Many thanks.
