Title: Multi-faceted Paperweight, included flower, possibly German?
Post by: David E on September 27, 2014, 05:01:22 PM
I picked this up in Berlin recently, and wondered if anyone recognises it? It is multi-faceted with included green and yellow flowers, and a swirl of frothy bubbles at the base. I did see a few other 'weights in this style, so reckoned they might be specific to Germany

The base has quite a bit of age-related wear. 6.5cm tall.

Hi.  I think that German / Czech is a good call. According to Peter von Brackel, quite a lot of factories made paperweights of this style.

Many thanks Alan, very helpful. Do you know what time period these 'weights were produced? I suppose if there were several factories producing them, this could be a very open-ended answer!  ;)

I hope Alan will agree with my interpretation of Peter von Brackel's information ...

Best ballpark time range = 1900 - 1930

Hi.  I think the 1900 to 1930 period is most likely, but it could be a bit earlier or later.  The better the glass quality, the newer the weight, generally.

Thanks both, I appreciate the advice. Difficult to gauge the glass quality without other examples, but I'd probably err on the side of caution and say 1920-onwards as the quality looks quite high. The wear to the base makes me think the reverse, but we all know how deceptive that can be.
