Title: Deep Purple/Amethyst Coloured Firing Glasses
Post by: RoyJ99 on October 24, 2014, 02:36:54 PM
Found these little glasses yesterday in a second hand yard and they intrigued me. I'm calling them firing glasses very loosely and only because of the thickness of the base. Very crudely made, lots of air bubble/inclusions. Each measures approximately 7cm x 4.5cm.

A year or two back I had something very similar - perhaps a little taller and in blue - and like this one it was crude in all respects.         I think Ivo suggested very modern, despite the antique appearance, and I seem to remember that Turkey was suggested as possible origin.
Not saying your pieces are definitely a match, but do look as though they might be.

Probably best not to use the words firing glass in the subject heading, as am sure this will get all the C18 collectors on a high :), although appreciate your reasons for using the expression, but it has to be said that the real things were usually quite refined in construction and never crude like these.           I stand to be corrected, but suspect also that period firing glasses were probably made in clear glass only. :)

Thanks for the reply. I have seen a few firing glasses in Cranberry or Bristol blue however I do agree with you on these being more modern. I have no idea what to call them though lol.

Did anyone say Egypt? It might be an option....

What do you think Ivo, part of a tea service or something similar? I'm assuming your not meaning dating from the time of the Pharoes  ;)

these would appear to be made with a deliberate antique look - maybe with tourists in mind, and in the mistaken belief that all old glass should look misshapen and full of bubbles.             I think Egypt was the other suggestion made when I posted mine.
Although the shape is similar to C18 and C19 jelly glasses, these might simply represent a small drinking glass of some description.

Thanks Paul. Do you have the link to your post at all? I completely agree with your thoughts but would just like to look at yours out of curiosity.

I'd been looking under Turkey on the Board's search, and couldn't find it  -  just tried Egypt and eureka .....
