Hi, Does anyone have any ideas on this bowl? IT has got some aventurine in it. Very grateful if you can id it. ;D
-
Possibly Monart? A bit hard to tell from your pics, which don't enlarge too much to see detail in the whole thing. I think you need one of the folk who really know Ysart glass to tell you more.
It doesn't have a "button" over the pontil scar, and the splodges look a little too round for my liking on the image of the base, which makes me fret a bit that it might be related to what is called "Cellophane Glass", or be by some other "Scottish Maker" who had been familiar with the Ysart's work, or had trained with them and then worked elsewhere.
Lovely thing though, whatever it is. :)

That would be cool if it is Monart :)
-
Have you checked Scotland's Glass and the Ysart catalogues there?
You'll find the links in Frank's profile.
-
No I havent Ill try that thanks

You'll find the links in Frank's profile, but I've tracked it down for you.

AAARGGGHHH we're cross-posting - and I've edited too, AND this post got duplicated while I was searching.
-
Cheers, I wonder if its cellophane glass or if it is someone who has tried to do a copy of monart. It isnt a button shape on the pontil.
-
On Monart, what is called the "button" pontil mark consists of a round blob of glass being put over the scar where the break occurred and then flattened and polished to make a place for the labels.
This wasn't done on some of the earlier Monart, and can depend on the construction of the actual piece whether or not it was practicable to put the blob on without damaging or compromising it.
Cellophane glass tends not to be opaque - hence the name Frank invented for it, because we are still clueless about its manufacturer, we just strongly suspect Czech.
-
Hi,
My instinct says probably Czech - is the glass quite thick?
Could you put a bigger picture up - you can post up to 125KB
-
No its not thick, i have some Vasart pieces and its same thickness as them. I have cellophane glass and its no where near as thick. I think you might be right at czech. I will put some better pics up.

It looks very much like a Monart bowl shape ZA. Most of the ZA bowls I have seen had the type of base finish ie the pontil scar being completely polished away.
But to be sure it is Monart, some clearer and larger photos would help.

I think these are better, may help it ID it.
-
It is Monart shape code ZA and colour code 156 and a pre war piece (1924 to1939) IMHO.

Thank you Gary, I paid £20, :)
-
That looks much more like it!!
It was the base picture with the "blobs" of colour that looked a bit iffy - now I can see it more clearly it looks lovely!
Is the orange colour actually 2 colours - a rich orange and a more yellow orange?
I have a bowl in the same colourway!
-
Oh, just realised What Gary said - is it red then, not orange?
sorry, my brain is obviously not functioning :P - the title says red! :-[
-
It s an orangey red colour. I do love it. My first Monart piece . :)
-
Whew. ;D
